THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, August 3, 1966 Durham MP Honor Guesi OTTAWA -- Durham MP Russell C. Honey, chairman of the Government Caucus, was guest of honor of the Jamaican Canadian Association in To- ronto. The dinner marked the fourth anniversary of Jamaican Inde- pendence. Mr. Honey represented Prime Minister Pearson who was un- able to attend. He conveyed the greetings of the prime minister and the Canadian government and referred briefly to recent Political events in Jamaica which enabled the former Crown Colony to gain internal self government in 1959 and full independence in 1962, when it withdrew from the West Indies Federation. Underlining the importance of growing trade between Can- ada and the Caribbean area, Mr. Honey referred to the re- cently completed Common- wealth-Caribban-Canada Confer- ence held in Ottawa earlier this month. He noted that under the Commonwealth - Caribbean as- sistance program adopted at the Conference Canada will pro- vide financial assistance for the development of the Jamaican fishing industry, projects for rural water storage and dis-| tribution and a program to in- crease the level of skills on the Island by contributions toward the purchase of technical school equipment. Referring to the production of his own riding of Durham, Mr. Honey said he was hope- ful that the recent trade talks would see an increasing use of Canadian Flue-cured tobacco in Jamaica and other areas of the West Indies Soap Box Derby s Has 16 Entries BOWMANVILLE -- Close to 16 cars have been entered for the first annual Recreation Department Playground Soap Box Derby to be held Aug. 4 on the Simpson Ave | Following the derby th entation of awards will | made by Deputy Reeve Fice,| Reeve §.
