Not only is it the Civic Holiday weekend, but it is also the weekend of the first annual County-Town Carnival. The idea was born back last February when Mr. Jack Wood- Feist. .~ ward, President of the Whitby. Chamber of Commerce, at the annual meeting of the Chamber, asked the directors what ideas they might have for something that could be held annually and be representative of the town of Whitby. It was soon learned that the newly formed Whitby Yacht Club was holding a re- gatta in Whitby harbour on Civic weekend. It was quickly decided by the Chamber of Commerce to enlarge upon this idea and turn the weekend into a gala all sports weekend. Mr. John Pantony of DuPont of Canada was appointed General Chairman. "From there," com- mented Mr. Woodward, "the thing just grew like Topsy." County-Town Carnival is now a very real thing and getting bigger every day. "The.recep- tion that has been given to the Carnival by local businesses and industries, as well as the town's people themselves, has been nothing short of tremen- dous," said Raymond Huff, who is handling the publicity for the weekend, BIG PARADE The Whitby Jaycees are or- ganizing a huge parade Satur- day morning, July 30, to "kick- off" the whole affair, The theme of the parade is commerce and industry in the community. This will be shown by the dozens of floats being entered. Everyone from Dunlop to Dairy Queen is getting into the act. Bands, 1€385 majorettes, arnival Ri marching units and, of course, Bo-Bo the clown. And the parade is just the beginning. The rest of the week- end is going to be just as much fun. The famous Canadian Wheelsmen Bicycle Racing As- sociation is sending a team of international bikeracers for a fifty lap race right in town. The British Empire Motorcycle Club will be™staging a Motor- cycle Scramble on the Satur- day afternoon over a specially constructed obstacle course now being prepared in the north- west section of town. This is sure to provide thrills, spills and excitement galore for the spectators. Three separate dances are pDLOOInS planned for Saturday night, Whatever kind of dance appeals to you --round, square or teen---« you're sure to find it in Whitby Saturday and Sunday, thé Whitby Yacht Club plays host to a flotilla of over fifty sailing craft from all over Lake One toric and-at least two faces ar@ planned over a buoyed coursé at the lake front. Or do you find lacrosse, baseball, horses shoe pitching, or lawn bowlin, more to your liking? If so, you'l find them at County-Town Cam nival. How about a pancakdé fry, drama festival, Boy -- demonstration, campfire an sing-along? All these are here for you in Whitby on County~ Town carnival weekend.
