THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, July 27, 1966 9 England Cops Thriller SAFC Wants To Reach Cup Final LONDON (AP)--England and West Germany are high and dry in the fina) of the World Cup--Seturday -and---soccer-- is holding its head up proudly again, England edged Portugal 2-1 Tuesday in a thrilling semi-fi- nal at London's Wembley Sta- dium. A crowd of 90,000 stood and cheered all 22 players off the field at the end. Between them, the two teams erased the tun- pleasant memories of much that had happened in the tour- nament previously --- players sent off the field, suspended, in- jured by vicious tackles, feign- ing injury, wasting time. These were some of the facts of the England-Portugal game: Only 11 fouls were committed --eight by England, three by Portugal. None was dangerous Only one player was slightly hurt--Jose Torres of Portugal, who tripped over the press photographers squatting behind the touchline, He made light of it, imped back and played on. There was not a single hold- up for injury. Nobody once ar- gued with the referee. Nobody adopted delaying tactics. At the end, the players of both teams rushed to shake hands and walked off with their arms round each other's shoul- ders, Portugal has another game at Wembley Thursday -- against Russia in a playoff for the third place. West Germany defeated the Russians 2-1 in the other semi-final. Some 90,000 fans in Wembley Stadium gave as loud an ova- tion to the valiant Portuguese as they did their victorious 11. And the British press today re-| flected that same sentiment. | "England the great' was the main headline on The Express. Says Desmond Hackett: 'Eng- land played its way into soccer history with confidence, poise and moving courage, It was a performance that thrust down the throats of complaining na tions from South America and Europe that England was not fit to play in the final."
