6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tueydey, July 19, 1966 SPORTS BEAT By ERIC WESSLBY Times Sports Editor Sunday's triumphant showing by Green Gaels in the annual Ontario Lacrosse Association junior 'A' all-star game ~-obably won't lead coach Jim Bishop into any false feelings. He 'still thinks his club will have rough sailing in its bid {to become a Minto Cup finalist for the fourth straight season. As Jim commented following the game, "All-star teams don't always jell right off, the bat". It's too bad Gaels couldn't have a couple more games with the Stars, they'd be top attractions any- where, Sunday's game drew more than 600 spectators and. had_ the game. been. played. in Oshawa. it probably. would have drawn more . ; League convener Ivan Davie of Whitby and OLA pre- sident George "Red" Duddin were both happy with the turnout, "We'd have liked to have played the game in Oshawa but couldn't work it in on a. Sunday," Ivan said, 'and we couldn't get the Huntsville arena, another _ strong lacrosse spot'. ALL-STARS CERTAINLY floored a potent power play whenever they had a man advantage, which wasn't too often. Coach Dave Hall would throw out Graeme Gair, Jim Grady, Ken Thompson, Jim Paterson and Doug Favelle whenever the occasion cropped up and while they gave Merv Marshall several anxious moments, they couldn't take advantage of the situation, On one occasion, Bishop had Gaylord Powless, Dwight Davies, Doug Sut- ton and Dave Keenan out and they completely stymied the vaunted power of the Stars. Powless also proved why he has to be rated the top player in the junior circuit. His 10 point effort proved he can accomplish this feat against the best of opposition and his work on the draw for three of the seven goals scored by Ross Jones was great. And young John Clayton was certainly effective picking up loose balls, Powless put on another good ball-ragging display before passing to Phil Clayton for a goal while Gaels were shorthanded in the third period. STAR'S JIM GRADY and Graeme Gair certainly didn't do anything to diminish their reputations in the game and had it not been for the flurry of penalties early in the third period, who knows, the game might have been closer, Fred Whalley, manager of the Gaels, was a confident observer at the end of the second period, however, "I said we'd beat them by six before the game started," he said, "and I see no reason to change my mind," And he was right, although Gaels went him two better. OSHAWA ACADIAN CLEANERS, who struck out re- cently in an attempt to represent Ontario in the Ca- nadian junior baseball tournament at Newfoundland, will try for another trip out of the province this weekend when they go against the province's best junior clubs in a three - day tournament at Maple Leaf Stadium, Cleaners have drawn Ottawa St. Francis as a first-round opponent Saturday afternoon. A victory in that game would send Cleaners into the semi-final of the 10-team tourney on Sunday, Winner of the tournament will travel to Altona, Pa., to meet some of the top junior clubs in the eastern United States. Jim and Ted Lutton will have 17 players ready for this series, including three additions to the roster from Peterborough Coyles, . including lefthander Brian Rawlinson. Rawlinson proved effective in the re- cent junior tournament at Little Britain, Favored team in the tournament is Toronto Leaside, which won last year. SHORT SHOTS: Kitchener Rangers recently signed forward Jim Krulicki for the coming Ontario Hockey As- sociation Junior "'A" season, thus putting an end to the rumor Krulicki was heading to a United States university . And did we goof, referring to Pam Miller's final hole score as a bogey on Saturday. It was an eagle.
