MYERS, PhD Parents with young children often feel sure that, if they could rear their children away from the crowded areas of big cities, they could protect these youngsters from bad influences by other children. These par- ents may overlook the old saw, "There's safety in numbers." As a rule, the wide - open spaces on the edges of suburbs often afford many secret play places for youngsters out of the sight of adults; also places with! physical hazards. During summer days such protection grows more urgent as a rule than during winter. There is need for supervised play areas for children every- where--in suburbs and suburbia as well as in slum dreas. Children in crowded dreas of cities normally have /the advan- tage of more childrefi in the immediate neighborhood near their own ages than do many where they can have normal' playmates, GOOD OPPORTUNITIES Some parents get together in one another's homes to estab- lish informal play schools for these young children. Parents facing these problems need to go to no end of effort and in- convenience to provide young children with playmates near their own age.
