16 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, July 14, 1966 CHILD GUIDANCE Reward System Helps Child Who Is Slowpoke At Home By GARRY C. MYERS, PhD Many @ parent is viien vexed at the slowpoke child at home. Many a2 teacher is annoved af the dawdler at school and this child is often inattentive there. A mother writes of a daugh-|), ter, six, who has a two-year-old sister: "She is a chronic 'dawdler' not only at home .getting dressed, undressed, washed be- fore bedtime, eating and com- ing to the table, hut also at school, Her teacher says that she is inattentive and doesn't get her work done and conse- quently is missing a lot in her Grade 1 class. "T have had a conference with the teacher. She suggested that we work on getting her to do things at home within a certain time limit. I've been trying, but obviously I haven't done it cor- rectly, because she seems to me to be getting slower and slower. "Needless to say her slowness aggravates me and I often lose my temper with her, Just to- night I sent her to bed without brushing her teeth because she took so long in the bathroom just washing hands and face. 1) am sure that my anxiety causes even more slowness in her. "I know of your method of 'chair-sitting' during the hours in which school is in session to cure the problem of 'before going to school' dawdling, But what about all the rest of the times? What can I do about her inattention in school? Her teacher says that the child has more ability than she is using. Naturally I am concerned that she develop good reading skills during this year in Grade 1. "We read her a story almost every night before bedtime and sometimes she reads to us from her pre-primer. She enjoys this and seems to like to read, but has said many times that she 'hates' school." READ FREQUENTLY My reply in part: It is fine you read a story to her every night. Read more often to her, especially after the baby has gone to bed. Try then to have some good times with her, you and dad, especially after she is ready for bed. En- courage her to read to her sis- ter. This would improve her reading and make her feel more worthy in the family--the big girl |talked more often with her com- | prompt.
