But not the angler. He sweltered, yes, but he en- joyed excellent bass and pick- erel fishing. The bass season opened gen- erally throughout the province last Saturday and good to ex- cellent catches were reported by..the Ontario department of lands and forests. And pickerel --with a general opening last month--continued to go for bait and lure in goodly numbers. a noticeable effect on speckled trout, with peer te fair results reported in most of the depart- ment's 22 districts. Reports from 21 of the depart- ment's districts: : NORTH Chapleau -- Pickerel excel- lent in Missinaibi Lake, Betty Lake, Sawbill Lake and Tooms Lake. SUMMER SKEET SHOOT Use Variety Of Shot Guns In Novel Handicap System The Summer Handicap Skeet Shoot, for The Don Smith Tro- phy, was held at the fields of the Oshawa Skeet Club on Sun- day. A new "twist" was added to this tourney in the unique man- ner which shooters were handi- capped for the shooting. Using scores made in shoot- ing over the past few months, skeeters were classified into ca- tegories under a percentage ba- sis and this basis determined the victor, with another 25- straight. A handsome silver tray was won by Rudyk for his fine shooting. Scores of 24 broken birds were turned in by Stan Starr, Jim Latereau, shooting the 20- gauge and Russ Watson, shot- ing a 12 - gauge, J. Tanna- hill, Keith Vanfalkenburg, Jim Harrigan and Kemp Smith all cashed in with 23, each with the 12 - gauge gun. Other 12- gauge entrants were Ernie Ary- what gauge of a gun the cOn-|hart with a score of 19, while testant would be allowed to shoot. Qualifying classes were made as follows -- 90 per cent and tinder entered in the 12 - gauge class. 94 per cent to 90.1 per cent entered the 20-gauge class, 96 per cent to 94.1 were classed into the 28 gauge category and over 96 per cent shot the frus- trating 410 - gauge gun. Lake Nipissing west good for pike and pickerel, poor for bass, Lake Timagami and Emerald Lake areas poor for all species. Best baits min- nows and artificial lures. Parry Sound--Most bass fish- ing only fair on opening week- end although a few good catches of small bass in Georg- ian Bay and Calendar Bay. Ex- cellent pickerel along south shore of Lake Nipissing. Lake trout good in Lake of Bays. Port Arthur--All species fair to good. Sault Ste. Marie--Lake trout} good in Ranger and Garden lakes. Speckled trout good in streams, fair in lakes.
