BIBLE LESSON Manasseh, Evil Ruler, Reigned Long Over Judah By R. H. RAMSEY From the standpoint of here- dity it would seem that Manas- seh should have been among Judah's most outstanding kings. He had the good example of a righteous father--Hezekiah, who did so much to lead his people back to God and their destiny) apap, as the chosen people-and he had the advantage of an excel- lent religious upbringing. Yet, Manesseh turned out to be a degenerate ruler, one whose very name has become a by- word for all that is evil. It has been suggested that en- vironment and the tender age of the young king when he as- cended the throne were basic- ally responsible for Manasseh's early departure from the ways of God, He became king at the age of 12 and it may well be thet he came under the influ- ence of corrupt royal courtiers, for he began his reign by for- etting God and all He had done for the people of Israel, by for- getting God's law, command- ments and covenants, Manasseh reigned 85 years, the longest of any king of Judah and only God's eternal patience can explain why the Lord let so evil a monarch rule His people for 60 long a time, Manasseh's reign was essen- tially a time of peace for the Southern Kingdom. Though caught between the feuding pow- ers Egypt and Assyria, the country managed to avoid ac- tual combat. "But they harkened not: and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the Lord destroyed... wickedly above all that the Amorites did." Our historian could hardly have used stronger language to describe what Ma- nasseh led Israel to do in delib- erate defiance of God. The sentence of doom was therefore pronounced from God himself by the word of his prophets: captivity, death and destruction, Jerusalem would be measured by the same line of justice that measured Samaria Bond Street West at Rosehill Bivd. |) Uust north of the Oshowa Shopping Centre) Minister: Rev, Frank 4. Our church has all the answers, There is no need'for you to think, just believe" Unitarians broke this man-made command over four hundred years ago. In the the sixteenth century, Michael Servetus challenged the of God in three persons, As a result, Calvin ord be burned at the stake. Persecution, mental or physical, did not stop mankind from questioning; these Unitarians--Francis David, Joseph Priestley, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Darwin, William Ellery Channing, Theodore Parker, Ralph Waldo Emerson, all suc- cessfully challenged the orthodox position, Unitarians are the scientists of religion--the questioners, the examiners, the seekers of truth.
