EDDIE REIGLE By ALEX FARRELL Canadian Press Staff Writer West Germany has ambi- tions of becoming a major hockey power, and the West German Ice Hockey, Federa- tion hopes a 42 year-old Cana- dian, Ed Reigle, will . help bring this shout Reigle, whose merit as a coach was demonstrated in Sweden from 1957 to 1960, went to Toronto this spring after the European hockey season ended, and is consider- ing an offer to take charge of the West German national team. Reigle coached the Austrian national team last season and has also coached in Switzer- land since leaving Sweden. Sweden was the defending world champion, having won the 1957 title in Moscow, when Reigle went to that country, but international competition was not as keen then as it now is. Swedish hockéy people credit Reigle with doing much to raise the general level of the sport during his three seasons in their country. When the Swedes were en route home from Colorado Springs, Colo., in the spring Wi t0005 sinning the world title again, Swedish coach Arne Stromberg stopped off in Toronte te see Reigle and than« his prede- cessor "for doing more than anybody else to bring us these championship medals." HE SPEAKS GERMAN The West Germans hope that Reigle, a Winnipeg native who speaks German, can do for them what he did for the Swedes. A German hockey official who has been in touch with Reigle said the Canadian told him that it would take five years to build West Ger- many up to the top interna- tional level, and that the na- tional team should be entirely rebuilt with young players who can be kept together for several seasons. att me PAUL HENDERSON BOBBY HULL MEETS MAYOR OF HULL Chicago Black Hawks D'Amour, at "Bobby Hull "the keys of the city" and is starry left-winger, Bobby Day" in the Quebec town, across the Ottawa River Hull, greets the Mayor of from the national capital.
