"@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tussdey, Mey 17, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR QUICK TRANSITION! On Sunday afternoon we were watching Oshawa Generals make a superb and spirited bid for Memorial Cup honors and less than 24 hours later, we were watching Oshawa Green Gaels open the defence of The Minto Cup, Canada's Junior Lacrosse championship award. Incidentally, there's an exhibition softball game at Alex- andra Park tomorrow night, so if anybody has the vague idea that there's such a thing as "'aslack season" in the sports whirl -- they're just not with it! : FIRST THINGS FIRST -- Oshawa Green Gaels won their big home opener last night and did it in convincing style. A lot of lacrosse fans may not realize the fact, but last night Oshawa whipped their toughest opposition of the season. The Toronto Township team has been working out since back in January and they had lined up what was hoped to be a team good enough to dethrone the champion Green Gaels. True, when playoff time rolls around, they just might be that good -- but they weren't good enough last night. Oshasva Green Gaels .continued to prove them- selves as the best conditioned team in lacrosse -- they can run-stop-run again, and repeat the procedure, for an entire game -- and still wind dp in the last period as the 'freshest team" on the floor. Gaels do everything at top speed, they check, they run, they pass, they move, all at top speed and in the final analysis, this is their secret of success, Their incessant drive always results in victory and as long as the individual members of Jim Bishop's team retain this atti- tude and incentive, they're going to be mighty hard to beat. JUST IN CASE our readers, either one of them, have got the idea that we have forgotten all about the Memorial Cup finals -- we'd like to say right now, we've got a few remarks to say about this recent Canadian Junior hockey final. At the moment, we feel too personally involved to give a fair and truly honest opinion. We think the officiating was lousy, totally inadequate, a Junior "B" referee trying to handle a Canadian championship final -- he was too slow himself, on his skates, he watched the puck too much in- stead of taking a look at the immediate "after-play" and he was far too lenient. It's about time the Memorial Cup finals -- Canada's greatest amateur hockey classic --Allan Cup finals are now-usually a session between ex-pros -- get the best referee in the business. And never -- bu' never -- should one referee be appointed for the entire series. He's got to be human and as such, he has his own personal feel- ings, inducements, convictions -- or whatever you wish to call it -- before they've reached the fourth game -- let alone a full seven-game series, The appointment of one sole person to be in complete charge of an entire championship series, can not humanly be fair to either team -- nor <o the referee himself. It's long since the time when the CAHA should "wake up" and get pith it. Even the NHL alternates offi- cials in the Stanley Cup finals. It's time the CAHA got some new ideas -- they haven't had one for years! GM Blair Pays Tribute | To His Oshawa Generals General Manager Wren Blair paid tribute to the Oshawa Gen- erals team today, in their gal- lant fight for the Memorial Cup. "Certainly all members of our elub would have loved to win that time-honored mug and all members gave it all they had, but Oil Kings were just a shade better, I guess," said Blair. "T told the boys in the room, after the game, that they need not shed any tears nor hang their heads.' You've been a great club and I'm every bit as proud of this team as I have ever been of any championship § clubs that I had in the past." He also paid tribute to coach 3 "Bep" Guidolin and his trainers Stan Waylett and Gordie Myles. "Bep" got everything there was to get out of this team and I congratulate him." I also extend thanks to our hard-working trainers who have worked| By GEO. H. CAMPBELL [Oshawa Times. They represent the first club in three years, that can check the Gaels well enough to slow down their attack and at the same time, present a break- away threat. Green Gaels were definitely the better team, but experience and superior speed were the two major factors. At even terms, until the late stages of the game, Toronto Township held their own and forced Osh- awa to even resort to "long shots". The one thing that most of Oshawa's opponents seem to fail to realize -- the Green Gaels are strong enough and good enough to play the last period as if they were acutally trailing on, the scoreboard. Coach Jim Bishop has his team in superb condition -- on top of that -- which makes him a fortunate coach these | "Gaels" are individually dedi- cated to go '""all-out'. Even Bishop admits that their sustain- ed energy and drive, even when they should be "tired" -- amazes him. They play as a team -- and as a team, they're great!
