WOMEN'S | HOSPITAL AUXILIARY Oshawa General Hospital MCDA. Report Of The Women's Auxiliary 1965 The year 1965 was most successful for our Auxiliary, thanks to the splendid support ond co-operation of the entire membership. The Evening Chapter has also enjoyed' a successful year. They have assisted the Parent Auxiliary in most of its endeavours, and have sponsored activities of their own. They are particularly interested in providing extras for the Paediatric Department in the form of television sets, record players, scrap books and toys. During 1965 they have added a new service 'Play Ladies" --- members of the Chapter who volunteered to work in the Paediatric Ward of the Hospital at the request of the Head of the Department. They ore setting aside a good portion of their funds for furnishing a Play Room as soon as it available. , The Gift Shop continues to be one of our prime sources of income. A substantial sum of money was trans- ferred from the Gift Shop Account to the General Auxili- ary Account during 1965. We also operate a Gift Cart through the Hospital for the convenience of patients who cannot patronize the Gift Shop. ! In addition to our Gift Shop operation, our income was derived from our St. Patrick's Bridge in. March ond our Mammoth Bake Sale, Tea and sale of Dolls of all Notions in November, while the Evening Chapter spon- sored a dance, "'Capricorn Capers" in January, and a Fashion Show in October, as well as holding a Chinese Auction at one of their meetings. These projects all pro- duced most rewarding financial results. We were able to invest $21,000.00 in 1965 in Guar- anteed Investment Certificates recommendd by Mr. Gor- don Miles, Manager of the Toronto-Dominion Bank. In addition, we were able to pay out $1,500.00 in Schoiarships in Physiotherapy. Our three recipients main- tain a high standard; Miss Japhia Terlecki is in her third year of a degree course at McGill; Miss Kathrine LaRush is in her third year Diploma Course at Toronto University, ond Miss Diane Savoie has completed her first year. This Scholarship is one awarded to high-ranking students in any secondary school in the County of Ontario. Our Candystriper Programme has been requested by several hospitals in Ontario. At the Regional Meeting held in Lindsay last May, a panel on Teenage Volunteers was presented. At the Hospital Auxiliaries' Association Con- vention in October in Toronto, we were again requested to take part in a Teenage Volunteer discussion. At the October Meeting of District No. 7 in Lindsay,. Mrs. A. W. Armstrong was elected President. The next District Meeting will be held in Oshawa in May. In January, Candystriper Recognition Night for the ' girls and their mothers, proved to be a most successful ond enjoyable evening. Fort the first time, Teenage Volun- teer Pins were available and were presented by the Auxili- ery to all volunteers with 100 hours and up. The Board presented silver bracelets for 200 hours and higher with additional charms for each 100 hours. In May of 1965 the Joint Auxiliaries held o most enjoyable Membership Tea in the Piccadilly Room of the Genosha Hotel. This was a most delightful event, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Harry Finer. Aiso in May, commemorating Hospitai Week, 10,- 000 place mots were distributed to local hotels ond restaurants. During the past year we hod two very successful social events: namely, a Tea held at the home of Mrs, C. Robson, honouring Mrs. George Telford, retiring Direc- tor of Nurses. We were honoured to have Mrs. T. H, Everson, our Honorary President and only living chopter Member of our Auxiliary, make the presentation to Mrs. Telford. In October, we also honoured Miss Jane Cole, who retired after 50 years of service in Oshawa General Hospital, at a Tea at Adelaide House which many of her life-long friends attended. Mrs. Gordon Conant, the Hon- orary Vice-President, made the presentation. Our Training School and Social Committees have had co busy'year. Entertainment has been arranged 'from time to time, including a luncheon for the Graduating Class ot the Golf Club in May of 1965. Newspapers and magazines are also supplied to the three Nurses' Residences. Refreshments were served in the Cafeteria on March 12th, following the formal reception into the School of Nursing of 39 Junior Nurses, which took place in Northminster United Church.. A Bowling Party was held on March 23rd for Student Nurses, followed by a Coffee Party in McLaughlin Hall. Auxiliary Members assisted at a reception held in the Cofeteria for the Gra- duating Class and their friends following the Baccalaur- eate Service in Knox Presbyterian Church in May of 1965, with 250 present. The Sewing Departments of both Chapters have made worthwhile contributions throughout the year to the Nurs- ery and in Paediatric Wards, providing embroidered crib spreads, baby gowns, knitted articles, slippers and foot- warmers--also crayon bags and scrap books. The Oshawa Public Library renders a most helpful service in connection with our Library Cart, and we have been pleased to send them a cheque for the purchase of new books. 44 Visits were made with the Library Cart and a total of 1,626 books and 1,076 periodicals were distri- buted during 1965. This department renders an invalu- able service also by. supplying .reading materials to the Isolation Ward. As is our custom, we had representation at the On- tario Hospital Auxiliaries' Association Annual Convention in Toronto in October. Mrs. C. R. Lunn of the Evening Chapter was appointed to the Hospital Auxiliaries' Asso- ciation Committee on Teenage Volunteers. Mrs. James McCansh was appointed to the Public Relations Com- mittee of the H.A.A. -- As in past years, at Christmas, we distributed small gifts to the patients in Hospital--o public relations ges- ture which seems to be appreciated. During 1965, a new service was started--an Emergency Cupboard under the supervision of Mrs. E. Tite of the Social Service Depart- ment. This has been of great assistance during the year, In the Adelaide McLaughlin Memorial Chapel, non- denominational services are heid every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Candystripers assist in bringing patients down to the services, and one young lady even played the organ. Through the generosity of R. .B. Reed and Sons, flowers are placed on the alter every week of the year, except Christmas and Easter, and the Auxiliary is most apprecia- tive of this kindness. At Christmas and Easter the Auxiliary places flowers on the alter. Our Membership in the Parent Auxiliary stands at 209, and in the Evening Chapter, at 90. We have 10 Life Members. The Parent Auxiliary held ten General Meetings and three Executive Meetings during 1965, and the Evening Chapter, ten General Meetings and one Executive Meeting. We are grateful to the Hospital Board and Stoff for 'the many kindnesses extended to us, and it is our hope that we may continue to be of service. Respectfully Submitted, Wilda L. M¢eCansh, Mrs. James McCansh, President
