? ff. Sete RO week we Zz EROBJa. OH S2z om wa 12. er i] vo of wi le; be an po the Th } THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, April 16, 1966 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA GENERALS snapped off the first game of their OHA - NOHA Memorial Cup series, here at the Civic Auditorium last night but not before they got a good and valuable scare. North Bay Trappers not only scored the " first goal, they held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period and if you don't think that didn't surprise our Generals -- you're crazy. They Had been told for weeks that the "Northern champs" would be a pushover -- and maybe that could still prove true -- but only if the Generals play -hockey. If they thought they were just going to go through three or four workouts -- they had that idea wiped out real early last night and we think it was all for the best. Sure, the Generals proved they've got what it takes to dis- pose of the NOHA champions, but the Trappers also proved a point too -- the Generals had better not get too careless. We think this was great, mostly because we think this Shawinigan Falls Junior team, which right now is polishing off Halifax Canadiens pithout the least bit of trouble, could prove real troublesome. The word out of Quebec is that Shawinigan Falls beat Montreal Canadiens in an exhibition game, and did it handily, If they're truly that good -- they could be real tough in a playoff series, especially on their own ice. ' WE HOPE THEY ARE! Sure, we know, we're not past North Bay yet and they could get to be a problem, but we think Generals, if they stick to their knitting, can take care of The Trappers. But Oshawa better not fool around, either! Then after that, comes Shawinigan Falls and the word is that they are a surprise, they're tough, strong and real good. We hope they are! Following their OHA campaign, Oshawa Generals need to be extended and if they are to win the Memorial Cup, they need to be going all-out. A stern series against Shawinigan Falls could be just the best thing that ever happened to Oshawa Generals. And if Shawinigan Falls proves too good -- then that's the way the puck bounces! SECOND GAME of the OHA - NOHA finals goes here tonight at the Civic Auditorium and following last night's attendance, we can go along with Manager Bill Kurelo and assure the customers of plenty of room, They didn't quite sell out all the tickets last night -- but they did sell a lot of standing room, mostly because a lot of hockey fans would rather stand in their own preferred end of the rink than be allotted a seat. Coach "'Bep'"' Guidolin is getting a big charge out of this series, since "Northern Ontario" is his own stamping ground and he'd love to win this series in four- straight games. He fully realizes that his Generals will have a tough chore winning two-straight in North Bay but the Oshawa boys had better also realize that they have to win at least one game in North Bay -- or their situation be- comes serious. SPORTS SHORTS -- The requiem for Toronto Maple Leafs is being held this weekend and all Hogtown Haters are invited . THE FISHING SEASON is aimost upon us and the avid anglers will be pleased to know that Mol- son's are again running their 'Big Fish" contest, which in- cludes large mouth bass, small mouth bass, pickerel, north- ern pike, maskinonge, lake trout, speckled and rainbow. . HARNESS RACING fans are enthused about tonight's card at Greenwood, when Baron Adios and Drednaught are booked to go in the $4,520 Swansea Stakes. This could prove a real big, for Greenwood! back -- as he went for Heindl's tricky "fake". --Oshawa Times Photo puck over to Bobby Black (not shown) who tapped it into the net.
