HONOR BUTTARS, Reference Librarian To some, the word statistics signifies a terrifying and mean- ingless array of figures. To others, it is an exciting word, a key to interpreting the economic and social conditions of a com- munity, a country and _ its people. No reference library in this country can function adequate- ly without some books of sta- tistics, especially Canadian sta- tistics. The isuer of such statistics is the Bureau of Statistics, or DBS for short, which was set up in Ottawa in 1918. Under the guidance of able statisticians, it has earned the reputation of putting out records second to none in the world. Its best known publication is the stout, sturdy Canada Year Book. There are also the Can- ada Handbook, the Census, and some four hundred other period- ical publications which deal with many diverse Canadian depart' s and ir tries. The Canada Year Book, pub- lished both in French and Eng- lish, does not limit itself entire- ly to columns of figures, but also reviews the developments of particular sections of Cana- dian life and economics. Special feature articles are also pre- sented in each yearly edition. Those in the 1965 Year Book (still our latest issue) include Federal Government Surveying Labor Income; Price and Price and Mapping; Astronomy in Canada; Use of the English and French languages in Canada; Agricuiture in the Canadian Economy; Forestry Products and Changing World Markets, and Operational and Technolog- ical Changes in Rail Trans- port. But if you also wish to know the highest mountain or the longest river in Canada, how many ounces in a pint, the camping grounds in the Nation- al Parks, the members of Par- liament, and a list. of books about Canada, this information too is in the pages of the Can- ada Year Book. The Canada Handbook, more properly entitled Canada 1966 (or current year) the Official Handbook of Present Conditions and Recent Progress, is a small- er DBS publication, based on the same official sources as the Canada Year Book. It is, how- ever, a more pictorial volume with text and illustrations tak- ing precedence over the statistics. This attractive paper back could be recommended for home purchase and is obtain- able from the Queen's Printer for $1.50. Space does not allow us to consider the many DBS periodi- cals. A few which we find use- ful in the library are: Canadian Statistical Review; DBS Week- ly Bulletin; National Accounts; Indexes, etc. Although mentioned last the Census is also a very impor- tant DBS publication. No stu- dent doing an economic or so- cial study of his community can afford to overlook its pages. The 1961 Census has not been produced in the usual hard back volumes, but in a black loose- leaf binder format in which sections can be inserted as published. We are still receiv- ing such items. All these DBS _ publications will be stored in our library in- definitely to become source material on Canada for future Oshawa citizens.
