About 400 twirlers were. entered in competition. ' Wendy Allin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morley Allin, Woodcrest ave., Oshawa, took the top award in the basic novice strutt competition for entrants between seven and 10 years of age. She also placed second in the _ intermediate open solo for nine and 10- year-olds and the intermediate visitors solo for the same age category. Cindy Kowal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kowal, St. George st. n., Bowmanville, walked off with first-place honors in the advanced basic strutt division for entrants be- tween seven and 10 years of age. She achieved two sec- onds, one in the nine and 10- year advanced "'T" strutt cate- gory and the other in the seven to 10-year novice military march division. N.Y. Crackdown Cuts Crime NEW YORK (AP)--Operation Crackdown, which put uni- formed policemen in every New York subway and train, has cut | major nighttime subway crime by 62.3 per cent in its first year, the Transit Authority says. But the transit police say they are strained by the extra night work, and demand that the 2,722-member force be nearly doubled. Operation Crackdown was launched one year ago today after a series of brutal subway murders, robberics and as- Saults. He assigned a policeman to every train and station from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Because there weren't enough transit police to do the job then, 800 regular city policemen were temporarily assigned to subway duty. The cost was placed at $1,800,000 a month, counting the off - day overtime requiredof 1,000 city police.
