6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, Merch 30, 1966 Hospital Commission Vetoes Ajax Addition AERA Lowney cree meeting of the Ajax and Pick- ering General Hospital, Tues- day night. Chairman R. D Thompson said approval to start planning an additional 105 to 110 beds had been turned down by the Ontario Hospital Services Commission. In his report Mr. Thompson said that the commission was of the opinion that with the expansion program at Oshawa and Whitby and with the new Centenary Hospital in Scar- borough there would be enough is in this area until 1970. The commission said there would be need for an additional 30 active beds yearly in the area from 1970 to 1973. Mr. Thompson said that the Hospital Commission's forecast was based on its forecast of population in the area which was quite a bit less than the county forecast. STANDARDS NOT MET Chairman Thompson also said that the hospital had failed to get accreditation on their first survey last year because it did not yet sufficiently meet the standards for accreditation. Hospital Administrator K. J. MacInnis said the most impor- tant event of the year was the relatively smooth transition ef- fected in the change from a 50- bed hospital with 8,000 square feet of floor area to a 127-bed unit with over 90,000' square feet. Mr. MacInnis blamed the "pill" for the lower than anti- Gipated occupancy of the hospi- tal during its first full year of operation, another reason was the long delay in the comple- tion of the fourth floor. $60,612 DEFICIT The administrator, in his re- port, said revenue for the year atvamounted to $1,074,513; while, expenses were $1,135,125 leav- ing a deficit of $60,612. Mr. MacInnis said it was in- teresting to note that in 1959, the first year of the Provincial Insurance Plan the hospital's per diem rate was $17.10; while will be $32:15 per diem. He predicted that Ontario Hospital bills would continue to rise year by year. the six-bed intensive care unit had been opened in May of last year and had been well received by the medical and nursing staff as well as the public, He said the hospital had purchased special cardiac and respiration equipment for this area. The administrator predicted that there would be increasing use of electronics and automa- tion in hospitals and that there would be a growing emphasis on the need for regional plan- ning and close co-operation be- tween hospitals. NURSES NEEDED Assistant Administrator and head nurse, M. J. Gerrow, said the hospital had not yet attain- ed the recommended ratio of 60 for this year the budgeted rate) Family Monuments Individual Requirements STAFFORD BROS. LTD. US said lack of transportation facil- ities and unsuitable residence accommodation were deterrent the hospital. Medical Staff President, Dr. H. D.
