GEORGE CHUVALA, left, and Cassius come into contact during Clay's left the fourth round of Tues- day's fight in Toronto. The sight of Clay's glove dis- torting Chuvalo's features was a common one through- out the 15-round bout. Cassius Keeps World Crown In Longest Fight Of His Career By ED SIMON TORONTO. (CP)--A superbly conditioned Cassius Clay went 15 rounds for the first time in his eareer without visible signs of strain. But George Chuvalo, the 6-to-1 underdog in their heavyweight battle at Maple Leaf Gardens Tuesday night, showéd up Clay as something less than a devas- tating knockout puncher by ab- sorbing his best shots and stay- ing with him to the end. "I hit him with seven or eight of my best punches but he didn't go down, sol had to back Off,' the self - styled people's champion said in his dressing room after dancing his way to a unanimous decision that sur- prised virtually none of the 14,- 500 spectators. Paid admissions of about 13,- 900 contributed to a gaté of ap- proximately $165,000. "His punches have a lot of snap but he's not a big banger," said the Toronto heavyweight j whose face carried four or five souvenirs of the champion's| lrapier-like left jab. "He didn't! {hurt me at any time." | CLAY STAYED UPRIGHT Nor was Chuvalo's reputation several brisk exchanges with no apparent ill effects. Terrell was to have been Clay's opponent Thursday in an ili-starred match that-was first run out 6f New York because of the World Boxing Association thampion's alleged underworld associations and then banned in Chicago after Clay sounded off about United States policy in Viet Nam, Chuvalo finally entered the picture when Terrell balked at the terms of his contract and withdrew from the fight. The switch probably resulted in a more crowd-pleasing con- test, if not a closer one. Chuvalo, never knocked off his feet in 48 professional fights, never stopped moving in on Clay, trying to wear him down with a body attack that fre- quently strayed below the waist- line. As he bored in, the Canadian took seven or eight punches for évery one he threw. Clay re- péatedly flicked lefts into his facé, frequently following up vith dazzling combinations. One ringside observer counted 147 punches by the Louisville Lip in the eighth round alone. Clay came through the fight unmarked but took his share of quate training for their short- comings, Chuvalo because of the lateness of his substitution for Terrell and Clay because of in- terruptions for appearances he- fore his draft board in Louis- ville, Ky., and the Illinois Box- ing Commission, which sought an explanation of his Viet Nam remarks, Clay also said he hurt a knuckle on his right hand during the fight, although he appeared to be hitting sharply with both hands throughout. The cards of all three officials had Clay comfortably in front. Referee Jackie Silvers gave him 73 points to 65 for Chuvalo, using the five-point-must system under which the winner of a round receives five points and the loser four or less., Judge Tony Canzano Scored it 74 to 63 and judge Jackie John- ston made it 74 to 62 for Clay. By rounds, Silvers gave nine to Clay and two to Chuvalo with the other four even. Canzano scored it 12-1-2 and Johnston 13-1-1, The only round Chuvalo won on all three cards was the sec- ond, in which Clay stood back and challenged the Canadian to throw punches to the body. ¢ THE OSHAWA TIMES, 7] = Wednesday, March 30, 1966 "He Kept Saying 'naraer, harder, harder," Chuvalo said afterwards. BUTTONED HIS LIP When the round ended, Silvers walked over to Clay's corner and told him to stop talking. The Lip remained buttoned for the remainder of the fight. But he continued to dictate its progress, launching the third round with a steady tattoo. of jabs to the head, stepping back and letting Chuvalo pound at his body and finishing with a two- fisted attack to the champion's head. | In the middle rounds, Clay oc-| casionally resorted to jab-and-| run tactics similar to the strat-| egy employed by Terrell against | the Canadian, but at other times) he slugged it out, invariably | landing oftener than his oppo- nent. | Total receipts from the gate, | closed-circuit television, broad- casting and movie rights were estimated at $300,000, a figure reduced by a threatened boycott by U.S. patriotic organizations | that cut down the number of| theatre outlets for the telecast. | Clay's share was in the neigh-| borhood of $175,000 to $70,000 for: Chuvalo.
