§ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, March 24, 1960 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR OSHAWA GENERALS may be out to prove that they can do-it the hard way but it certainly is rather jarring on the nerves of their faithful. Generals grabbed off a win in the first game of their series with Montreal Junior Cana- diens, scoring an impressive victory there on Sunday night. Then they gave it a real gallant effort, Tuesday night, at the Civic Auditorium, but had to yield 2-1, in one of those battles that could 'have gone either way. For a lot of the "casual" fans, this was the last straw -- they had lost at home. THIS MORNING all is changed! We don't know for sure phether tht teams are going to make this a "win-away- from-home" series but for sure, the first three games have worked out in that direction, Oshawa Generals came through with a brilliant performance last night in Montreal, to once again take the lead in this crucial semi-final series .Gen- erals won 3-2 last night over the Junior Canadiens, Christian Bordeleau put Canadiens in front with the first goal of 'the game but Bobby Orr tied it up, in the first period. Bordeleau got his second tally in the second stanza to give the home- sters a 2-1 lead but Danny O'Shea tied it up, before the period ended. Then Danny got the big winning goal, early in the third period and he and his mates made it stand up, by dint of some great checking, to give Oshawa a 8-2 victory. THE STAGE IS SET now for a real wing-ding, here on Saturday night. The fourth game of the series will be played here on Saturday night, at the usual 7:15 time and this one will likely produce the biggest crowd of all time, at the Civie Auditorium. Generals haven't lacked-for-support-at-any . stage of this season but their playoff games have attracted the "overflow" that creates traffic problems in the parking Jot. This Saturday night's turnout, we think, will be the big- gest crowd of all. The Generals have once again gained the margin they need in this semi-final set, they have won on the other guy's ice and now, all they-have to do to gain a berth in the OHA Junior "A" finals, is win their two re- maining home games. First of. these is Saturday night, here at the Civic Auditorium and if they can win this one, they are really in the driver's seat. Fifth game is in Montreal on Sunday and the sixth game is here next Tuesday night. CRUSHMEN came through with a big win last night also. Tied at one win apiece, in their final series with King- ston Frontenacs, the Oshawa boys pulled out a great 3-1 win, in overtime, last night, right in Kingston and that could be the one they need, to take the round. Phil Solomon scored the early overtime goal that gave Oshawa Crushmen the victory. They added another, only a minute later. This marked the fourth playoff game that young Solomon has scored the winning goal for the Crushmen, a truly com- mendable record, The Crushmen play the fourth game of their series with Kingston, here at the Civic Auditorium, to- morrow night and as with the Generals, a win here, will put | the Crushmen in a commanding lead. : Junior Crushmen } | Regardless of what the song says, there's no place like the road as far as Oshawa Generals are concerned. Both goalies were in the sep- sational class, during the regu- lar play. In the overtime, Phil Solomon took a brilliant pass from Roger Knowles and made it 2-1, with a classy finish, right from the overtime faceoff, at just 49 sec- onds. Power play goals by Orr in the first and O'Shea in the second kept Oshawa on even terms at the intermissions. Once again Generals' defence was called upon to preserve the ictory. After falling behind, Canadiens applied pressure for almost the entire third period. Three penalties to Oshawa help- ed the Montreal cause.
