20 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, March 21, 1966 |they say the chances right now Ex-Indonesian Deputy Unlikely To Come Back By TONY ESCODA powerful -- and controversial-- KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia|figures in the government of (AP)--The ouster and arrest of| President Sukarno. Diplomats who know this wily First Deputy Premier Subandrio in Indonesia has put the brakes) little man do not rule on tne career OI UIE U! Ue inuee: Beasties f+ onan out the t But jare slim. Subandrio, 51, has no mass following and has become too much of a storm centre for Ja- karta's new military rulers to permit him to slip back onto the scene. Regarded as pro-Communist and the chief architect of Su- karno's Peking-aligned policies, Subandrio has earned the hatred of militant anti-Communist stu- dent organizations and distrust on the part of the military. Swhandrin's rise of nower re- sulted almost solely from his close personal relation with Su- karno. TOUGH AND SHREWD : Unlike most of Indonesia's political leaders, Subandrio did not play a major role in the fight for independence against the Dutch in the late 40s. This prevented him from claiming a revolutionary background on which to form a political base. He climbed up the ladder of government as a diplomat and an executive rather than a poli- tician. His ability as a tough, shrewd bargainer and his will- ingness to swing as far left as Sukarno wanted are credited with keeping him on top. sorn on Sept. 15, 1914, he was graduated from medical school in Jakarta in 1942, held various hospital appointments and prac- tised privately in the central Java city of Semarang. Subandrio did not co-operate with the Japanese during their Second World War occupation of Indonesia, and for this was ar- rested briefly in 1944. In 1945, he abandoned medi- cine to become a protege of Socialist party leader ~ Sutan Sjahir. This began his political career. ENVOY TO LONDON After serving as secretary- general of the ministry of in- formation, Subandrio in 1950 was named Indonesia's first am- bassador to London, In 1954, he went to Moscow as ambassador. He was re- called two years later to act as secretary-general in the foreign ministry. A year later he became for- eign minister and held that post until Friday's cabinet purge. As the manipulator of Sukar- no's foreign policy, Subandrio was instrumental in shaping the "cursh Malaysia" campaign that helped sharpen the dividing line between Indonesia and non- Communist Asia. Diplomats date the start of Subandrio's downward slide from late 1964 when he began manoeuvring for support amid) sporadic rumors that Sukarno's| health was worsening. This threw him closer to what! was then the biggest and most influential political organization in Indonesia -- the Communist party of D. N. Aidit which had chosen to toe the Peking line, Then the Communists backed last October's abortive coup detat in Jakarta, Subandrio's name became linked with it. Su- bandrio denied he was involved in the coup attempt. Blast Set Off Close To Bridge LONDON (AP)--A gang exe 'ploded a dynamite charge near London Bridge early today, but the span was not damaged.
