a Crothers Wins in Sio By JIM CRERAR TORONTO (CP) -- Madeline Manning, a 20-yearsold quarter- miler from Cleveland, shattered the world record for the wom- en's indoor half mile Friday night at the Maple Leaf Indoor Games and was so excited she kept right on running to her ho- tel to phone home the good news. Miss Manning had never run the 880-yard race indoos until her record - breaking perform- » ance of 2:10.2. And she had compefed at a half-mile out- doos only once. She paused just long enough to learn of her achievement, then darted out of Maple Leaf Gardens and sprinted a_ half- block to her hotel. "T really didn't have any plan about the race," she said. *'Af- ter I found myself running com- fortably, I just kept it up." But she added that a male voice from the crowd of 13,685 shouting "world record, world record" as she hit the stretch spurred her on. "I was pushing myself any- way, but I puhed just a little harder at the finish line." CLIPS RECORD It was good enough to clip three-tenths of a second from 2:11.9, followed by Kiprugut in 2:3.3 and Ray Tucker of Ham- ilton, last in 2:20.4. ISN'T DISAPPOINTED Kiprugut wasn't disannointed. He said the purpose of running was to see how he could do in- doors. "It was very difficult," he said. "I like to win, but it was very difficult." It was a great night for fore- legged athletes. George Ander- son of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., tied the Ca- nadian open record of 5.2 sec- onds gvhile outduelling Tom Ro- binson of The Bahamas and Harry Jerome of Vancouver in the final of the men's 50-yard dash. Anderson was running on strained ligaments in his left leg. Jerome ripped off a 5.2-sec- ond clocking in his heat to equal the Canadian open mark and break the native record, but fin- ished third behind Anderson and Robinson, who won the event |here the last two years. Jer- jome and Robinson were both }timed in 5.3 in the final. | Jenny Wingerson, blonde English-born beauty from Tor- |onto, won the women's 50-yard {hurdles in 6.4 seconds over sec- jond - place Cathy Chapman of | Toronto and Tammy Davis of WwW Women Shaiier Two Recoras, "Ti ne te me s q 'Providence | By THE CANADIAN PRESS; American' League | Eastern Division WL. Records were broken in the mile, the high jump, the two- mile and the giris' relay events, A fifth record was established in a heat of the 440-yard girls' relay when Toronto Parkdale high school broke their own mark, set last year, of 3:31.9. Their time was 3:30.0. Charles Francis of Jarvis Col- legiate, Toronto, tied a meet record of 5.4 seconds in the yard dash. ; Ken How of Toronto's T. L. Kennedy secondary school shaved 4-5 of a second off the meet record of 4:25.6 in the mile run. The two-mile record went to Phil Payett of Toronto York Mills Collegiate.
