The versatile "Smiley" -- his guitar, violin and banjo -- has been scoring a solid hit with: Blue Horse pa- trons who have long showed a preference for this type of Country and Western Music. One. of his real show-stoppers is his specialty of performing musically on his specially-built baseball bat that plays like a violin. For the feminine side of the act, "Smiley"' has the talent- ed Rose-Mary as a soloist and Leroy St. John on the guitar. "Smiley" and his troupe hail from. Nashville, Tenn., the heart of Grand Ole 'Opry, which has produced more Country Music stars than any other part of 'the continent. The Spruce Villa Hotel in Whitby has booked the 'Bobby Dean Reyue" in for .a six-day engagement starting next Mon- day night. Bobby Dean -- who formerly played the Spruce with his trio --has added two members to the cast, both of them Negroes. Peggy Jackson is a dancer and Mary Ann Pettifort a singer, Bobby performs on the drums and also takes a whirl at the electric organ. "The Debutantes' will close out their week at the Spruce to- night, The Oshawa Sweet promise a tip-top program at the R. S. McLaughlin Collegiate Auditorium, Saturday, Feb. 5 at 8.30 p.m. That is when they will pre- sent their annual show, 'The Roaring 20's," which features that old-time favorite dance, The Charleston. Four members of the Oshawa RAY PRICE Chapter of the SPEBSQSA (So- ciety for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America) -- known as the "Four-in-Accord" will also perform. They won the | 1965-66 Ontario District Quartet Championship. the Whitby Hotel will feature "The Bob Mercer Trio" during the coming week. Bob and Dodie Mercer recently had en- gagements in Los Vegas and at Lake Tahoe. They have added the talented and lovely Ann Ridge to their act and the re- sults are bound to please Stage Door patrons. Manager James Maher says this is one of the best acts to play at his hotel since Lounge entertainment was inaugurated several weeks ago. Blake Emmons who will be one of the big stars at the Osh- awa Civic Auditorium on the night of Tuesday, Jan. 25 for that gala Country Music Show which will also feature Little Jimmy Dickens and Ray Price. Emmons is well known in Oshawa's Country Music world following several appearances at the Hotel Lancaster. Little Jimmy Dickens is a Columbia recording star and has a long list of hits such as "Old Cold Tater," 'Country | Boy," "A-Sleepin' at The Foot of The Bed." He also has an album out, "Big Songs by Little Jim- my Dickens," In the highly competitive re- cording field, Ray Price has long been one of the big sellers on the Columbia label. In 1956, "Crazy Arms" led 'all Country Music trade charts for more than 20 weeks. In 1959 "Heart- aches by the Number" was the year's number one tune and Ray was named "Number One Coun- try and Western Artist'"' in Bill Board Magazine's Disc Jockey Poll. Handsome -- and exceptional- ly personable both on and off stage -- Ray Price is five feet ten, of medium build, and has dark. wavy hair and green eyes. He is a native of Texas. The Hotel Genosha's down- stairs lounge -- '"'Harry's Hide- away -- is to have some old favorites back for a two-week engagement starting on Mon- day.
