It is 'King of Blades," a 19- minute film released by Fletch- er Film Productions, Toronto, in association with the National Film Board of Canada. The film shows Don in a display of his world-famous. skating magic before a backdrop of the famous "Tee Follies" in which the Osh- awa skater is one of the bright stars, "King of Blades" provides an intimate close-up of Don both on and off the ice as he fol- lows his busy schedule. How- ard D. Fletcher of Fletcher Films was in San Francisco last summer during the "Ice Follies" long stay there to as- sist with production. That is the time of year when the big ice show follows its toughest sched- ule and ends out its season -- there is a daily performance and much of the balance of the day is spent in rehearsal for the new season which opens in September. Don Jackson reported for ice- duty at 5 a.m. during the film- ing of many scenes for 'King of Blades." The film includes actual shots from the wonderful world of the 'Ice Follies,' but most impor- tant of all it brings the audi- ence behind - the - scenes with Don, who won the World Figure Skating Championship at Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1963. Don's performance in this film has already won high praise from the critics, in keeping with his nightly per- formance in 'The Ice Follies," the most colorful and exciting ice .extravaganza in the enier- tainment worid today. THE SPRUCE VILLA Lounge in Whitby will hold over the popular Davey Yuan Quartette for an additional week starting next Monday. Yuan. personally scored a solid hit this week with trum- pet solos, especially such num- bers as "Moon River' and "San Francisco". For music lovers who prefer the standard tunes, he has strong appeal, fine artistry. Solid support is provided by the troupe's Hammond organ- ist, who can swing with some of the best performers on the circuit and Chi Chi O'Connor, the dancer, who lends the act plenty of glamor. General - manager Martin Chizen regards the quartette as the best act to play the Spruce Villa Lounge since it opened some 18 monihs ago. The Spruce Villa Lounge has been alert to the need for vari- ety when booking in new acts for its. cocktail lounge. More than some niteries, the Villa leans heavily on a wide variety of entertainment. "LUCKY" AMBROSE and his Western Music will take over the featured spot in the Hotel Genosha's dewnstairs room known as Harry's Hideaway starting on Monday night. The group will replace 'The Bradfords" (from _ Bradford, England) who set a long-play record for the room with no less than eight weeks in all racked up as a total since their debut here about 12 months ago. "The Bradfords"' will wind up their current visit with tomor- row's performances. The entertainment in the Hotel Genosha's Starlite Room will again feature Georgina and Jimmy, the famous Honky-Tonk piano duo who have been per- forming there for the past three months. Georgina and Jimmy both sing and Jimmy plays piano. Georgina is seen to best advantage as a mistress of ceremonies who knows how to encourage audience participa- tion' in their happy-go-lucky sing-songs. THE GOOD NEWS around the Blue Horse Lounge of the Hotel Lancaster is that "The Ramblers Three' will be back Monday for a one-week engage- ment. They are fine Country, Western and Blue Grass music, as Blue Horse lounge patrons readily know, and hail from Nashville, Tenn. Stan Farlow, the leader, is a versatile instrumentalist and singer. His renditions on the tenor banjo are unforgettable for their professional excel- lence. Another solid hit with the trio is the talented Nancy Ryan, whose stage clowning gives the act a solid change-of- pace. "Bud" Hopkins, on the base and tenor guitar, rounds out the trio. "The Ramblers Three" have been busy since their last ap- pearance here making appear- exponents of ances all over Ontario and in the eastern part of the U.S. "Chief" Adams and 'The Show Stoppers" round out their current engagement at the Blue Horse Lounge tonight, but they will return before long in re- sponse to public demand. GENERAL - MANAGER SAM LOCHRAN of the Central Hotel's Gold Rush Lounge did such good business this week with the lounge's act -- 'The Leading Ladies' -- he has re- booked them for a second week starting on Monday. One of the: act's strong sell- ing points -- Marie Peakers at the organ -- has won solid ap- plause from patrons. | Marie, whose father is well known to music lovers in the Toronto area, travelled extensively in the United States with the famous Joan Fairfax all-girl orchestra, "The Leading Ladies" dis- play their versatility with per- formahces on the saxaphone, drums and clarinet -- they also take a turn at dancing, includ- ing the Charleston in their ex- tensive repertoire. "THE INTER NATIONAL PLAYBOYS" are firmly en- trenched at the Cadillac Hotel as perennial favorites in the Coronet Room there. They con- stantly play to 'sell-out' busi- ness and send the patrons away in a happy frame of mind. They started their stay at the Cadillac in an auspicious way last September when their orig- inal one-week engagement was extended by two weeks. They start the final week of their current stay on Monday and General - manager Louis Bonnie is expecting more capa- city crowds to _-- this unique act THE RE. Is so about culture these days in Osh- awa, the role of the Oshawa Kiwanis Club, in this regard, is 'sometimes overlooked. The club has made a worth- while contribution to culture throughout the years with its Travel and Adventure Series -- which represent colored films on travel subjects with a well- known adventurer or explorer on hand personally te do the narration. The 12th Annual Travel and Adventure Series, 1965-66, will continue at the Oshawa Central Collegiate Auditorium Monday, January 10. 4 REMODELLING * REC ROOMS * ALTERATIONS * KITCHEN CABINETS -- * Custom Built.
