t ae S30 afternoon of each week.) Courtice High School By JANE FISHER The school recently held its Sadie Hawkins. dance annual featuring "The Young Set." A new attraction was added this year when the boys ar- vegetable cor- tived wearing sages. Something new has also been added to the wardrobes of the Senior Cheerleaders. The white leather GO-GO boots were dis- played at the three basket ball games held Friday, December 3 at Port Hope High School. (All three teams gave a splendid performance.) The Courtice Sen- Central High School MASTIN LEGER DORIS CHROMEJ Christmas is surely comirg, and around Central, that's won- derful news. It means that Mr. Carson has again been persuad- ed to be in charge of Christ- mas Capers for "just this year." Homerooms are busy preparing and rehearsing skits that have to be handed in to Mr. Carson by December 13. I won- der how the grade thirteen skit will turn out this year -- hum .« « -? Christmas Capers has become an annual tradition at Central, but with Central's growing population and lack of proper accommodations for the audience, the future may bring some problems and changes. Miss Miocich's art students have done a beautiful job deco- rating Central for the season. The huge front windows have been turned into picturesque scenes of - Christmas, while TEEN SCENE (Space is available each week in the Teen Scene columa for summaries on student activities from high schools and collegi- ates in Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville, Ajax, Pickering and other district centres. Those wishing to publicize their school activities are asked to submit their reports by Wednesday Oshawa's Don Jackson, the world's greatest free skater, knows what it means to keep a busy work schedule. But two special events 'nis month will make December something special for him. Don will make his debut in films as the star of a new color pieture, 'King of "Blades," a National Film Board of Canada production scheduled for release this month. An event of more impor- tance will take place in Sim- coe Street United Church, Oshawa, on Thursday, Dec. 23, 1965 -- that is when Don is to be married to Miss Joan Diercks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Diercks of Tempe, Arizona. KING OF BLADES "King of Blades' shows Don giving a display of his world-famous skating magic before a backdrop of the famous "Ice Follies," sched- uled for a five-day visit to Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, early in February. Jackson's rise to stardom is a prize example of how the wheel of fortune can sometimes bounce unexpect- edly to give a career new dimensions -- as an example, doctors advised against any strenuous activity ever for him immediately after he underwent surgery at the age of two. While school chums played hockey, Jack- son donned figure skates. He did so well that he won the Canadian Junior crown at 14. The road to stardom is a rugged trail endured only by the stout of heart, but behind every champion there must be stout-hearted backers will- ing to make extreme sacri- fices. In Don's case, it was parents, Mr. and Mrs. George J. Jackson of 110 Park road north, Oshawa, who worked hard over a 10-year period to earn the $30,000 plus, needed iors acquired a score of 36-33 over Port Hope. The students are now pre- paring for their Christmas ex- aminations which will begin on December 16 and finish Decem- ber 21. On the evening of the 21st the Christmas Dance will be held. "Wally and the Shan- dells"' have been chosen to supply the music. On Decem- ber 22 the students will return to the school for their Christ- mas Party where they will exchange gifts after the Grade 13 assembly. JANE FISHER. "Season's Greetings" in sever- al languages decorates the office windows, and various other artistic endeavors have surely brought the Christmas spirit into Central. The debate being prepared for the senior assembly is like- ly to be cancelled until Janu- ary. The attendance at the Cen- tral Forum is Yery poor, and if the club wis to continue operating, higher membership is necessary. The Drama Club had its first meeting, and elected the fol- lowing executive: George Bolo- tenko, president; Mastin Leger and Sandy Hughes, vice-presi- dents; Betty Crouter, secre- tary; Susan Lovelock, treasur- er; Marg Demoe, make-up; Elaine Sargeant, costume con- vener. Every year, the Drama Club puts on an excellent "Cen- tral Presents" program in Feb- ruary, and this year will be no exception. \ Youth And Welfare Branch Researched In Nova Scotia | \ By NICK FILLMORE AYLESFORD, N.S. As the spotlights pick up the trim figure of Jackson on the ice, sheer artistry and talent out- shines even the most glamor- ous spectacles. SPORTS HISTORY It was on March 15, 1962, that Jackson made _ sports history at the 1962 World Figure Skating Championship in Prague -- 20, he emerged as the world's best free skater in the men's singles in international com- petition. He became the first Canadian to win a men's single world title. , Jackson was acclaimed by a crowd of 18,500 as he ex- celled in a triple Salchow, triple Lutz, double Axel and in a dazzling array of fancy footwork. This brought him an unprecedented seven perfect scores in one performance-- season skating observers said his performance surpassed anything they had ever seen. Jackson, an unpretentious, mild - mannered performer who shuns publicity, that night surpassed the previous performances of such _all- time greats as Sonja Henie, Dick Button and David Jen- kins, but he was casual about it all, especially when he said: "'I asked Coach Sheldon Galbraith if there was any way for me to win and he said: "There's room at the top,' so I went out and skated." Don Jackson has done as -- as any man to publicize his native Oshawa in far parts of the world, and the city re- sponded to his Prague suc- cess with fitting pride. CIVIC RECEPTION The civic reception: extend- ed April 3, 1962, om his re- turn from overseas was one of the finest displays of its kind ever held locally. More than 10,000 lined the parade route despite the chill weath- = sleet ceremony in front of City Hall. Don Jackson at 23 is more than a world figure skating champion, he is an establish- ed star with the greatest ice skating extravaganza in the business, the famous Ice Fol- lies (with whom his present contract runs for two more years). What are his plans for the future Don is non-commital on this point, as always, but who can tell what he may achieve next with his great talents and ability to get along with people, regardless of race or color C.D.T.A.
