She adopted this philosophic outlook after she became a widow and began an English newspaper weekly called, The Canary Is- land Sun. Its purpose is to guide the English - speaking tourists who visit the islands. There are a thousand of them a day during the height of the season. "My husband was Ernie Hill, a foreign correspondent,' she told me during a visit to this country to see her grown chil- dren. 'Together we 'discovered' the Canary Islands late in the 1940s, while he was on an as- signment to do a year of travell- ing." It was love at first sight for both of the Hills. They came back to the islands whenever they could and planned to retire there. Before they could realize that goal, however, her husband died. Terry's working experience up to that time had heen assist- ling her husband with research. /But since her children were |grown, she decided to build a Inew life for herself, go to the jislands alone and try to write. | UNOFFICIAL 'GUIDE' | "But soon after I olas Esposito, to Edward Robert Barnoski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barnoski, all of Oshawa --Ireland Studio settled Summary of feports of meetings and activities of | Hopkins; second committee, Sis-|wishes for the success of the down," she said, '"'my enthusi- Oshawa women's organiaztions as compiled from reports |ter Edith Severs; third commit-/e submitted by their secretarie SA HOME LEAGUE Mrs. William James opened the Home League and welcomed the large number of women who were present. "Printing was a mystery to me," she said, 'But you know the old saying about fools rush- ing in, so I rushed in in a big way. I struggled to get govern- ment approval.for my project, sold .and collected advertising, wrote and edited the paper my- self from my small apartment. Then I had the paper hand-set to be run off on a two-page flat- bed press by a staff that under- stood absolutely no English." Doing what she want d to do without considering obstacles, however, paid off for Terry Hill. STAFF GROWS Today she has a growing staff as well as a small office, a crew of newsboys to whom she's the ite to go, what to see and where, '"fittle mother," and a weekly Sonn een cece a [paper se. ehsorbing that .many.| of the subscribers have it sent to them every week after they return to their native lands. Now Terry Hill--who built a new life after widowhood--can shine with contentment in her present role as publisher, editor, guardian of tourists and unoffi- cial hostess of the Canary Is- lands. She had her plan, she had her goal; but one thing she didn't have was time to consider all the obstacles that could and did block her way. She merely surmounted them. 4 SEE PRIVATE TREASURES MONTREAL (CP) -- Master- pieces of modern art, many never shown publicly before, were assembled in Canada re- cently for "Exhibit 21" at a local shopping plaza.
