PAINTS SUNWORTHY WALLPAPERS DUPONT PAINTS FREE DELIVERY 668-5862 ON THE TOWN HOLDOVER ACTS WILL BE the order of the day next week in several Oshawa and district cocktail lounges, The trend starts with the Hotct Lancaster's Blue Horse Lounge which again will present 'The Show Stoppers", starting on Monday evening. The act's repertoire banks heavily on Country Western Music. "Chef"? Adams has added lo- cally to his prestige in recent days with his Blue Lounge ren- ditions of Country Music favor- ites, -which also applies to Yvonne. Terry, the attractive vbealist. Lloyd Phinney and '"Tweddie", a comedy entertain- "er, round out the crowd-pleasing quartet (one of the best acts to play the room since it opened several pveeks ago). THE NEARBY CENTRAL HOTEL'S Gold Rush Lounge on King st. west will again feature Frank Motley and his five-man crew, starting on Monday. For those who prefer Jazz in the modern idiom, this is a solid attraction -- they also feature Rock N' Roll, standards and popular tunes. The talented Motley, who grew up in the same town as Dizzy Gillespie (Cheraw, S.C.), dazzles Gold Rush Lounge pa- trons while playing 'two trum- pets simultaneously (with beau- tiful clarity of tone and deft con- trol). This feat has required years of practice and persever- ance and gives the act true pro- fessional status. Frank is ably assisted in the act by a talented crew com- posed of Herbert Whitaker on, tenor sax, "Curley" Bridges at piano, Larry Ellis, on electric bass, and Jerry Summers on drums. Frank, a graduate in Engineering from South Caro- lina State College, served a stint in the famous U.S. Navy Band and later studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. The two Whitby hofels next week will follow the holdover policy also with their cocktail lounge. acts. GENERAL-MANAGER MAR- TIN CHIZEN of the popular Spruce Villa Hotel Lounge has heard such high praise for '""The Stagemen Trio" -- headed by Benny Silvertown and his trick- fill -- he has booked the group for another week starting on Monday. Benny, with his violin and comedy songs, proved to be a big hit with patrons this week, as did other members of the trio. He is ably assisted by Charley Rush, the . colorful tenor, and George Alonzo, sing- er and accordion player, but the act's big attraction is Silvertown and his trick violin, a unique bit of show business which never fails to draw applause. The trio (from Galt, Ont.) has toured extensively in the Mari- times and appears destined for much greater triumphs ahead. Patrons of the Stage Door Lounge at the Whitby Hotel will have one more week to enjoy "The Cliff Duphiney Duo", starting Monday. The act -- hailed by Manager James Maher as "one of the best on the cocktail lounge and night club circuit today'? -- will then return to its favorite stamping place; the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cliff Duphiney on the Ham- mond electric organ is a versa- tile and original performer and has performed with famous mu- sical groups and louis Prima and Keeley Smith and the Glenn Miller Band, ONE REASON FOR the: con- tinued success of Georgina and Jimmy -- the talented Honky- Tonk piano team at the Hotel Genosha's Starlite Room -- is their skillful use of gimmicks in the act. They get plenty of audience participation -- the kind that brings patrons back for more -- when they hand out song sheets and use a color-slide projector for-their -happy-community-sing- songs. George Tuba, dressed as a Keystone Cop, directs patrons to their seats and lends appro- priate atmosphere to the room recently redecorated in the Gay 90's motif with candelabra globe-lights and red velvet dec- orations, There is no telling how long Georgina and Jimmy will con- tinue their stay at the Starlite, which started some _ three months ago. They did spend more than five years at To- ronto's Brown Derby Restau- rant, and Starlite patrons are not hard-pressed to see the rea- son why. Jimmy James and "The Candy Canes" will continue on at the Hotel Genosha's down- stairs room -- Harry's Hide- away -- for another week start- ing Monday by popular demand. The group features Western Music and has a repertoire of more than 2,000 songs (with steel guitar, banjo, violin and piano accompaniment), They have toured extensively in the U.S. and recently completed an engagement in Montreal. GENERAL « MANAGER WILLIAM C. KURELOA, of the Oshawa Civic Auditorium has booked a special show for young adults on the night of Wednes- day, Dec. 29. It is "Shindig Holiday," fea- turing 24 Canadian musicians and four bands. Mr. Kurelo de- scribes this as "a rhythm and blues show with Rock N' Roll background."' The show also features the "Go-Go Dancers" and a Rock N' Roll group known as '"'The Comancheros." DID YOU KNOW that 'The Travellers" -- Canada's ambas- sadors of Folk Song -- were here last week for a half-hour program at the Oshawa Build- ers' Association banquet? It is hard to avoid superla- tives when reviewing their per- formance. Their simplicity of style, slickness: without artifici- ality, has won them plaudits in 20 countries and 14 languages since 1953. Their key purpose is the dis- covery, interpretation and per- formance of Canadian songs of all types from Indian and Fench = Canadian folk songs to wry satirical lampoons of such contemporaries as Pearson and sfanhaba Die 1Cnvacer, The quartet (Jerry Gray, Joe Lawrence, Ray Woodley and Simone Johnston) are well and favorably known from Vancou- ver to Britain, and to Russia, where they toured for 27 days in 1962, After their brief local appear- ance (for which they were paid $500), there is reason to under- stand why. They are special favorites on the university campuses, but er appeal is much wider than that. They should be a real attrac- tion for Centennial Year. As the Moscow magazine, Musical Life, said of their performance: "They haye done Canada much honor." * REMODELLING * REC ROOMS * ALTERATIONS * KITCHEN CABINETS * Custom Built CABINETS ROOFING and FLOORING * GENERAL REPAIRS REG.
