It takes too much e. "My real love is in por- trait work. For the last year, however, I have been at work on the window arch designs and the single theme line that runs right around the perimeter of the church," "Two portrait works are already finished and installed beside the altar. One is of Christ and the other the Virgin Mary. Both works show the intense warmth and security that the artist tried so hard to install in his figures. "T re-painted Christ's face six or seven times to get just the right expression and feel- ing," he said. '"'Even now I am not completely satisfied." Mr. Baczynsky was among five artists who competed for the project over a year ago. 'J heard of the competi- tion through relatives in Que- bec," he said. 'I flew up with an artist friend to take a look at the church. As soon as I saw it I wanted to win. I wanted to win. I contributed a design and was selected." 'Except for a short break in February when he flew to New York to get married, he has been hard at work ever since. The hours are very often long. "If inspiration is with me I will work right through the night. Most of the time I work until I am completely ex- hausted. "But I have loved every minute of the project. To you," he added, "the work looks half complete. But to me it is finished. "TI work all the time with a picture in my mind of the finished church."' Much of Mr. Baczynsky's work has been in gold leaf. Graceful arcs of leaves and flowers surround the window arches and _ decorate' the mounted columns that frame the altar. "I am doing this work for my people and for my church. The colors and the designs are firm. Some might not like them. But I am trying to catch the character and mood of my people. "TJ hope I am succeeding. 'Above everything else in this work I am trying to create warmth. I want to put the people in the mood for worship." Although still young the long-haired artist ("my bar- ber is in New York and I don't get to see him too often") has had a long and colorful career. FIRST PROJECT A member of the Salma- gundi artists club he _ spent three years on a travelling scholarship in Italy. It was there that he tackled his first church pro- ject. - "T painted several paint- ings on wood for a church in Yugoslavia."' He has exhibited his work in Rome and New York and has been loudly acclaimed, especially for his portraits.
