Norm Van Brocklin Returns To Vikings Coaching Post MINNEAPOLIS (AP)--Peace was restored Tuesday in Min- nesota Vikings' family after a tempestuous 24 hours during which Norm Van Brocklin, the head coach, quit, reconsidered and humbly returned. 'The question today was what effect the tornadic episode will have on the Vikings, who return to the National Football League Wars Sunday against Green Bay Packers, runners - up to Baltimore in the Western Con- ference. Everybody connected with the Vikings -- players, coaches and front office alike--insist the stormy 24 hours will either have no effect on Sunday's game or inspire the Vikings. Whatever the effect, Van Brocklin was a relieved, man Tuesday after, he aid, he "eame to my senses." "There is no explanation," the volatile, 39-year-old dutch- man said of his original deci- sion to quit. WAS DEPRESSED "T just became depressed, but I later realized I didn't want to quit, I've lived a life of not being a quitter. HOCKEY SCORES "T just. wasn't being rational. 1 couldn't think straight. I was feeling so sorry for my- self that I made this great mis- take, "Tapologize to everyone. I'm very sorry that I embar- rassed myself, my family, and my friends, I'm grateful to be back," * Van Brocklin confided that Sunday's 41-21 loss to Baltimore which virtually eliminated the Vikings as NFL Western Con- ference contenders, was what caused him to lapse into such depression. Van Brocklin announced to three reporters Monday morn- ing that he was quitting be- cause, 'I've taken this team as far as I can. I can't take them over the hump." He then went into seclusion for nearly 12 hours during which time he spoke briefly only to general manager Jim Finks and President Max Win- ter on the telephone. Then Van Brocklin telephone Finks and said he wanted to talk to him. "He told me he wanted to go back to work Tuesday morn-} ing," Finks said. "That 'was a} great relief to me. I didn't even| ask him why." NORM VAN BROCKLIN presented mixed reactions to newsmen yesterday while meeting them to his intention of returning as coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Just Monday, championship race. Van Brocklin said he was sorry and embarrassed over the incident.
