ARCAND MARKS ANNIVERSARY Adrien Arcand, head of a right-wing group known as Parti de |'Unite Nationale, addresses a dinner held in Montreal Sunday to com- memorate his internment by federal authorities and the banning of his group for the Crude Christmas Card Changes Musician's Life NEW YORK (AP) -- Richard pio, 7, to Weber's classes for a Weber remembers it as a "'piti- fully crude" Christmas card. But he says it changed his life. Weber was given the home- made card by a 15-year-old), mentally retarded boy who ad- mired his talents. He was a pop- ular, young jazz pianist then. "When that boy handed me! the card, something inside me) changed,' Weber recalled. 'I suddenly realized how self-cen-| tred my life was and I vowed to) do something about it." That was seven years ago. Today, far from the small) Illinois town where he gras handed the card before giving a Christmas recital in a mental) institution; Weber has set into motion at Columbia University) Teachers College a revolution in the education of severely men- tally retarded children. He devised a six-note method of instructing the mentally re-| tarded in the playing of musical instruments, using letters on sheet music which correspond to letters pasted on the keys of a piano. CONDUCTS CLASSES Weber, 38, is working on his doctorate in music at Columbia and conducts regular weekly music classes for mentally re- tarded children as part of his research for the degree. Among his pupils is Peter Connolly, 21, a mentally re- tarded youngster who, up several weeks ago, couldn't sit still at a piano, much less play a tune. "Today, Peter walks up to the piano or takes his clarinet in! hand and he plays such tunes as Jingle Bells, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, and many others," said the boy's widowed mother, Catherine Connolly. "But it doesn't end there," she said. "Probably the biggest benefit for Peter is the fact that at long last he realizes he can do something. He feels needed and wanted among other peo- ple." Scorpio was among about a |dozen youngsters gathered re- for a Saturday afternoon Ilelass under Weber. About 10 lteachers at the school stood around the room as Weber put ithe youngsters through their paces. "You must realize that up to now children like these pere icons idered unteachable," he said. "They can't even clean themselves or talk much better than a mumble or grunt. cently "Yet, with this method I have! proved that they can learn if fsomeone will give them learn- ing in little doses such as I do with only six notes of music." When Peter Connolly finished playing a tune on his clarinet, jhe turned to Weber, **You're my teacher," he said. "My nice teacher. I like you.")
