The winner of the pageant will receive a) $1,000 scholarship, $5,000 in| Bone Marrow Cells Study Key In Canc TORONTO (CP) -- Research scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital here have discovered that dormancy in certain bone marrow cells may be the key to further advances in cancer treatment. The discovery, based on ex- periments with animals, works around the differing behavior of cancer and normal cells and at- tacks the problem that power- ful chemicals and drugs used to treat cancers usually destroy more healthy than malignant cells. These drugs damage bone marrow, the source of red and white blood cells, and cannot be used beyond the point where they prevent the marrow from creating the blood cells. Red cells carry oxygen to the body, while white cells fight infection. B-B Goes Back Into Business OTTAWA (CP)--With the fed- eral election out of the way, the royal commission on_bilingual- ism and biculturalism plans to hold public hearings in six cities before. Christmas. The nine-member commission will split into two teams to com- plete its cross-Canada hearings more quickly. The six remaining sessions) originally were scheduled for September arid October but the' er Treatmen Drs. E. A. McCulloch, James E. Till and A. J. Becker con- centrated on the study of bone marrow and found that stem) cells are responsible for replac-| ing important bone marrow. Dr, Becker found that these stem cells live a sluggish exis- tence in a hive of activity in, the bone marrow. | CELLS DORMANT | Dr. MocCulloch and his assis-| tants were able to determine the proportion of stem cells present in bone marrow, while| Dr. W. R. Bruce studied the| that after dividing in two they) remain dormant longer than cancer cells. Dr. Bruce suggested that if drugs were used at a time when the greatest portion of stem cells were dormant, they would be immune to the dam- aging effects of the drugs. Putting the theory into effect) on mice, it pvas found that 1,000) times the number of cancer| cells were killed compared with the loss of only 20 per cent of healthy marrow stem cells. "This is tremendously en- couraging, but still only a be-) ginning,"" Dr. Bruce said Wed-! nesday in'an interview. "If cancer chemotherapy is/ to be really effective we need a differential of the order of| perhaps 100,000,000 rather than| 1,000. It shows, however, that the tools for effectively looking for differentials of this magni-/ tude are available right now," election campaign forced post-| ponements. A team headed by the co- chairman, Andre Laurendeau, will sit in Montreal and Edmon-) chairman, Davidson Dunton, will travel to Toronto and Re- gina. Neither co-chairman is ex- pected to attend a Winnipeg hearing, the commission's sec- ond there, because of prior com- mitments. The full commission will sit in Ottawa. he said. | | | | AMONTH FOR LIFE GORD'S A-GO-G0 Club DANCING Wed. Fri. Set. Sum. From 8:30 Admission by Membership. (Avail- able ot the doer).
