Artificial ski-runs made of nylon are appearing at several towns and may become a major recreational activity leading to an increase in Britain's skiers. They gave beginners a chance to try out at minimum cost what often proves to be an ex- pensive sport. As one expert put it: "The first week of a skiing holiday is largely wasted getting fit and beginners often have to go through so much agony on their first attempt at skiing that they give up the sport before they've really started. "All that is avoided if you have the use of an artificial slope." Construction is simple. The slope is made of nylon strands bonded into inch - long tufts which are fixed to sections of metal trellis. These are mounted on a wooden or fatu- ral slope about 100 yards long. The manufacturers say skiing on nylon differs only slightly from skiing on snow. The main difference is in tech Be- bill for the Torquay slope ran to £7,000. Advocates of skiing on artifi- cial surfaces do not suggest it could replace skiing on snow, but they stress it could help in instruction and for practice. Britain lacks the climate or conditions for skiing, except in the Scottish highlands for short periods in winter. Several private "groups as jwell as municipal authorities are studying the possibility of artificial slopes. Some have al- spurs, United on 19. Chelsea has 18 |points. The Crystal Palace run is 500 square yards in size and shaped like an inverted Y so that novices will be able to practise on the lower slopes, leaving the main run for the experts. . cause there is less give in the surface texture, the skis have to be kept flatter to maintain momentum. One of the most up-to-date artificial runs is at the south coast resort of Torquay in Devon. The 80-yard-long slope, which lies on high ground above a holiday camp, was built orig- inally as an off-beat amusement for summer vacationers, but it also attracted serious enthusi- asts. Now during the resort's off - season, between October and February, the keen skiers have the slope to themselves.
