@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, September 30, 1965 SAM MELE L. Flag Just One Win For Minnesota's Boss 'MINEAPOLIS (AP) -- Sam Mele is working on the biggest parlay of his life and it looks as if he's going to bring every- thing home at once. Minnesota Twins' manager has guided his team into the World Series, his wife Connie is due to give birth to their fifth child about the time the series opens and the Mele family is moving into a new home in Quincy, Mass. "Bringing the Twins home first may have been the easiest , of the three," Mele quipped. For a manager who just a year ago had a very uncertain future, Mele is rolling in clover. A' near cinch to be named American League manager of the year, Mele can't resist jab- bing lightly at former critics with a little "I told you so." Actually, Mele minimizes his own role in the Twins' surge to their first pennant since moving here from Washington. He won't admit that he be- came a more aggressive mana- ger and thus instilled aggres- siveness in his club. "T decided on a more aggres- sive team," he said. "But I don't think I'm more. aggres- sive. I decided last winter that we would have to do more} stealing, more hitting and run- ning and lots and lots more work on fundamentals to elim- inate those mistakes we made last year." BOSS BETTER, TOO Coach Billy Martin, picked up Mele to be his chief lieutenant on strategy and to build a fire under the twins, said Sam "be- came a darn good manager this year." "And, brother, he made good movies, things you never read about in the newspapers.' Mele admits his admiration for Al Lopez of Chicago White Sox has greatly influenced his style of managing. 'I've always considered Al the greatest manager ever. 'Tt isn't so much that I wanted to copy him; it's more that I wanted to compare what) I would do in a given situation to what he would do. Croxier, who last year earned the Rookie-of-the-Year award and was the only Na- tional Hockey League net- minder to appear in 70 games, weighed 170 pounds this sum- mer, the spokesman said. The five - foot - eight Crozier suffered what was called a nervous stomach attack, and pital brought the weight back to normal. ABEL EXPERIMENTS Red Wing manager - coach Sid Abel still is trying out dif- ferent combinations of the 1965- 66 version of his production line. The big decision is where newcomer Andy Bathgate will it in. Bathgate, acquired from Tor- onto Maple Leafs in an eight- player trade, earned his repu- tation as a scoring star playing mostly on the right side, but Veteran Ted Lindsay, who year after four years of retire- ment, again is retired offi- cially.
