SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' "MY CUP RUNNETH OVER" -- Jubilation, celebration, unmitigated joy, satisfaction and glory of triumph -- that's the atmosphere that predominated 'around these parts, last night. Oshawa Green Gaels won the Canadian Junior la- crosse championship for the third year in succession, they retained The Minto Cup -- they beat "The West", Yep! Oshawa Green Gaels knocked off the New Westminster "Salmonbellies" here last night, 9-5, to take the champion- ship series in six games. The revelry of being a champion is a thrill all of its own, Green Gaels have enjoyed this privilege for three years in succession -- a record equalled only by Brampton. The biggest crowd of the series was on hand last night' to witness a truly great performance. Mind you -- we can remeniber, in the days of the "old field lacrosse' -- they put even larger crowds into Alexandra Park and Motor City Stadium, to see the great GM team win The Mann Cup from Brampton Excelsiors. But last night's triumph was something special for the new genera- tion of sports fans. We only hope they remember -- because it doesn't happen that often! celebration sessions THERE WILL BE banquets and do not intend to galore, in the next few days or weeks, We d be one of those Johnnie-come-lately guys, getting on the band- wagon, after it's all settled. Right now, we'd like to state that "Jim" Bishop has done a stupendous job for Oshawa, for lacrosse -- and if you like -- for himself, A dedicated enthusiast, a strict disciplinarian but always with an eye to "promotion", Jim Bishop has put Lacrosse back on the map, in Oshawa. We say, with just cause "put back" because Oshawa, with a Mann Cup championship and 'World Cham- pionships", was very much on the lacrosse map long before the game got a big "tft" here in recent years. The 'Green Gaels" won this year's championship on spirit, they had tradition behind them and they had incentive ahead of them. It's a tough combination to beat! GALE'S LUMBER dropped a 7-5 decision to Brooklin "Concretes" last night in Brooklin, the second game of their Oshawa City and District Softball Assoc. "City Champion- ship" playoff series. That means that these two teams will go again tonight, at Alexandra Park, in their third and de- eiding game. Winner of tonight's game will play Bad Boys, in the first game of the City Championship finals, on Tues- day night, at Alexandra Park. In the meantime, the Juvenile finalists are busy. Jay Cees and Genosha Aces play the sec- ond game of their series, on Saturday night, at Alexandra Park, 8:00 o'clock and on Monday night, same time, same place, clash in the third game of the series, OSHAWA GENERALS get going on their pre-season training camp, today in Bowmanville. Manager "Bill" Kurello, at Civic Auditorium, hopes to get ice in there, in spite of the unseasonable weather, within the next few days ... GENERALS play Marlboros, this Saturday night, at Whitby Arena. Local hockey fans are reminded that this has nothing to do with their own season's tickets, This is Marlies' home game, strictly ... EVERY SPORTS FAN in Oshawa and the district, should make a point of attending and the clubs alternated goals until Oshawa counted two un- answered tallies in the last min- ute of the frame. Gaels took a 5-3 lead into the second period. second by the westerners tied the score. Marshall appeared shaky in the early stages of the period, vealed severe case of the 'flu yester- day morning. | THIRD STRAIGHT Green Gae By FRANK RATCLIFFE None but the brave ventured near the Oshawa Green Gael dressing .room last night, and those who did emerged with their clothing darkened by a cold shower. ° The celebration was in full swing. Boisteroi® cheering was easily heard in the hallway outside the dressing room, champagne flowed freely from the 64-year-old Minto Cup, and the shower was part of an ancient victory tradition, Oshawa Green Gaels had just knocked off New Westminster Salmonbellies 9-5 to pocket their third consecutive Minto Cup four games to two, The feat tied a record held by Bramp- ton, which won the trophy in 1957, 1958 and 1959, BEST OF THREE "This was the hardest one of the three,"' enthused coach Jim Bishop. "But the crowd was almost as big a thrill as win- ning the cup. It was indicative that ladrosse is big league in the Motor City." Attendance was 3,750, bring- He ing the six-game total to a @ record 17,622. Bishop also had praise for defenceman Jimmy Higgs, reci- pient of the McOnaghey Medal as the outstanding performer of the series. Higgs polled 23 of § a possible 24 points, to join team-mates Mery Marshall and Gaylord Powless as the award's only winners. MARSHALL PRAISED Goaltender Marshall was also singled out for praise. Accord- ing to his coach, he won the last two games. Last night, he made key third-period saves on Ken Winzoski, Ranjit Dillon and Paul Shymr to preserve Oshawa's lead. Gaels opened the scoring at the 8.22 mark of the first period, JIMMY HIGGS, (6), of Oshawa Green Gaels is held aloft by~ Phil Clayton (12) and Danny Sandford (18) last night after Higgs was voted winner of the A goal by Phil Clayton at 8.18 with Gaels playing a man short launched them on the road to victory; Oshawa scored two more goals before the period ended, entering the last 20 min- utes nursing an 8-5 lead: Content to hold their lead, Oshawa concentrated on defen- t Two early markers in the it was later re- he developed a and that t i the Canadian Championship soccer final, at Kinamen Stadium, this Saturday night. We don't often make thi: uP peal -- but every tennis player, softball player, softball fan, baseball fan, swimmer, lacrosse player and what-have-you -- they should all be on hand at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, this Saturday night, to see that Canadian Soccer Championship final game. Oshawa Green Gaels were a happy group of lacrosse play- ers after winning the 1965 Minto Cup last night, and the happiest was probably Jimmy Higgs. Appearing in his second Minto Cup series, Higgs was voted the McOnaghey medal as the most valuable player in the series. Eight press and radio men covering the event voted for the three most valuable players, with three points for first, two for second and one for third. His point total, however, was almost an incidental factor. He was one of the best check- ers on the club, was the best performer for either club on loose balls and consistently led Gael attacks. Over the regular schedule, he scored 49 goals, tied with John- ny Davis for second spot on the club. Powless led with 52. Higgs amassed 81 points to fin- ish fourth, In eastern playoffs leading up to the national final, he was fourth on the club in goals with 22, and third in points with 51, Ranger Puck 'Star Sent To Hospital KINGSTON (CP)--Rod Gil bert; leading scorer for New York Rangers of the National Hockey League last season, was sert to a New York tal Wednesday for observation of a back injury suffered in Mon- day's workout, "We don't think it's anything serious," said Emile Francis, Ranger general manager.
