6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, SATURDAY, Sepiomber 18, 1965 By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR GREEN GAELS moved one notch ahead in the Cana- dian Lacrosse Association's Junior "4" championship * playoffs, last night, here at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Remembering the first game and the tremendous potential the New Westminster club enjoys, one had to come away fully impressed by Oshawa's one-sided shoe-in, It was in direct contrast to the first game -- in this one, almost every bounce saw the ball come to an Oshawa stick. Gaels were hustling and it paid off -- it paid off in a couple of important goals, in the first half of the game, when it mattered the most. Not only were the Green Gaels pouncing upon the majority of loose balls in last night's game, but they also seemed to anticipate the location of the bounce, with the result they enjoyed about 90 percent of possession and lacrosse is like the law -- possession is ninety percent of the answer. New Westminster's great goalie, earned a standing ovation from the Oshawa fans, for his fine performance -- not once, but three times during the night, His blinding speed and uncanny accuracy in snaring the ball with his free "'left hand" was positively amazing He robbed several Oshawa snipers from point-blank range but in doing 60, he further established this corner's per- sonal claim -- this hockey-minded lacrosse goalie is. almost unbeatable on low shots of any sort and on his own left- hand side, his skill is fabulous. By actual count, 11 of Green Gales' 17 goals went past Wallis on his own right- hand side and 10 of these were waist-high or better. Of the other six, two were extremely high shots, on his other side, both fram quite close quarters. Incidentally, 10 goals is the most he's ever allowed in any one game, prior to last night, all season long. Don Wallis, OSHAWA'S hustle really paid off in big dividends last night. On at least three occasions, grabbing the loose ball, or stray bounce, in the corner, was turned almost immed- jately into a scoring play. And, as always, the team that hustles the most for loose balls, seems also to get the breaks. When they came to the third period, it was the Salmonbellies who were looking to the bench for relief. That pre-game report about Oshawa not being able to maintain the pace, proved the myth that most local fans expected. We've all said all season that nobody can stay with the Green Gaels, if they maintain a sustained attack -- and atill stay with the pace in the third period. Tonight will prove the true situation as to better condition. With no rest, this two nights in succession is going to provide the real test as to condition plus will-to-win. It's this cor- ner's opinion that the team that wins tonight's game will win the series and also, if Green Gaels keep their shots away from Wallis' free hand and put them at his stick-side, they'll win the game. As before, last night's game was studded with "stars" but this series is so big -- that individuals don't really count -- only when they are weak links. JUST RECEIVED the word! Gaels pumped 17 goals past the New Westminster Salmon- bellies goaltender at the Osh- awa Civic Auditorium last night, as they topped the western con- tingent 17-12, to take a 2-1 game lead in the Minto Cup series, In previous. competition this season, Wallis had never allow- ed more than 10 goals in any one game, Johnny Davis led the scoring barrage with four goals and three assists, treating a near- capacity crowd of 3,406 -- a rec- ord -- to his best performance in several .weeks. : HIGGS, JONES Ross Jones and Jimmy Higgs continued the fine play they have demonstrated throughout the series, each bulging the | mesh three times, Gaylord Powless notched a pair of mark- ers and set up four others to justify his selection as the game's number one star. Don Stinson also counted a pair and singletons came from Brian Thompson, Phil Clayton and Billy Armour. Armour, who won the scoring title with Hast- ings Legionnaires this season, assisted on four other goals, and was one of the sharpest per- formers on the floor. The brightest light in the los- ers' line-up was Ken Winzoski, who netted four. Bob Salt, a pick-up from South Vancouver, counted two.
