6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tucsdey, September 14, 1968 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' LACROSSE took over the Canadian sports picture last night, as The Minto Cup series opened in Oshawa and The Mann Cup series got underway in New Westininster. As it turned out, New Westminster teams won both opening games, We don't know for certain how Brooklin came out in their game but here at home, we saw a rugged-checking team trap the Green Gaels into playing their style of play, with a methodical first-period approach, Oshawa "Green Gaels' lost their big advantage when they quit running, in last night's opener. Defensive lacrosse was adopted as the two teams Played the first period on a strictly '"feeling-them-out" .basis, For the Green Gaels, this was a mistake, They found out -- or we think they should know by now that they found out -- man-for-man, New Westminster has too many players that "are big enough and good enough to 'beat their own check" and in lacrosse, this 1s how you create your odd-man ad- vantage. 9 GREEN GAELS have got to open up the play, They have have moulded on a wide-open, fast-running technique and we feel that if Johnny Davis, Gaylor Powless, the Thompsons, Higgs and Clayton, and the rest, will move into their wide- open, fast-running game, they can create enough openings and get enough breaks, to dominate the attack, Last night's first period was pathetically slow, We've seen dozens of sen- jor games that were much faster, They started at a cautious pace, each trying to "feel out" the opposition and the plod- plod style that emerged was not the Junior lacrosse style that has become popular around here. We got the impression that New Westminster tricked the Gaels into playing their brand of lacrosse -- and it was a real trap. While New West- minster established a systematic man-for-man checking plan, the Green Gaels got away from their usual wide-open running attack. e é . son of the Oshawa Green Gaels shake hands prior to the start of last night's opening game of the 1965 MEANWHILE (Back At The Ranch) -- We've Oshawa Generals moving into town and anxious to get going in their hockey activities .. .
