It's the result of a combined jartistic effort by Dad and the four children: Glenn, 8, Lloyd, \6, Murray, 4, and Ellen 2. Whynottas? They're three-di- mensional carvings of animals, |bugs and other creatures in such woods as walnut, red ce- dar, oak, maple, ash and cherry. The artistically inclined youngsters had been drawing the figures for fun, Then Mr. | Peterson got the idea of making |models based on the drawings. He cuts the figure out with a band saw and. uses a wood-rasp for roughing before finishing the model in sandpaper. They're called whynottas be- 'cause the children, when decid- {ing what to draw, would say: "Why not a dog" or 'Why not a cat" and the like. Thus far the venture has been a hobby but Mr. Peterson, for- merly a commercial artist with the Winnipeg Free Press, has some thoughts of turning it into a business sideline. His present job is in the consumer and in- dustrial sales promotion division of the Carborundum Co. in nearby Niagara Falls, N.Y. Co-ordinator of the project is Mrs. Peterson, a kindergarten 4\specialist, who gives final ap- proval to the finished work. Gambling Seen As Hard Life MONTE CARLO (Reuters) -- Gambling is a harder way to earn a living than manual la- bor, says Auguste Bernard, sec- retary-general of Monte Carle Casino. Bernard says professional *|gamblers expend more nervous energy at the gaming tables than men who work as ditch diggers, truck drivers or office employee: "Tf reales worked half as hard at some regular profes- sion, they could earn a comfort- able livelihood," he says. On the other hand, the crou- piers who control the gambling earn salaries equivalent to those of men in well-paid posts in in- dustry, banking or business. Many peapie attracted" by we element of chance apply for jobs as croupiers. But the Monte Carlo Casino screens applicants as carefully as the government investigates candidates for posts in the foreign service. The first iron rule is that croupiers must not gamble. The men who control the gaming ta- bles in the world's most famous casino are disqualified if they show any taste for betting in their private lives--even on race horses or by buying a lottery ticket. "Gambling gets into the blood quickly,' Bernard says. 'It is like dope addiction. A rei m- bler loses interest in everything but the gaming tables."
