DOWN 1. Cupboard YOUH HEALTH Dear Dr. Molner: My hus- band says he is not an alcoholic because he drinks only beer, and that a true alcoholic drinks hard stuff. I claim that beer as well as whisky, makes an al- coholic. Here is why. My husband drinks six quarts of beer a night, three as soon as he gets home from work, and three after he '"'wakes up from a nap." I am not asking for a per- sonal reply because he might get it in the mail and all hell would break loose. He does read your column, however, and: agrees that you make a lot of sense, Is there anything I can do short of putting. him in a hospital?--Mrs. G.B. I omitted, for brevity, some of your letter -- about beating you, wetting the bed, his black- outs, and his chills and fever. There's not much doubt that there are more alcoholics who ¢refer hard liquor to beer or wine, but that's because "'liquor is quicker." Alcoholic Husband Just Won't Admit It By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, M.D. However, the whole question is how much alcohol enters the system, Beer is more dilute, but six quarts of it represents the amount of alcohol in ap- proximately half a quart of whisky, and that is a lot of booze for one evening. So certainly one can be an alcoholic on beer, just.as there are "'winos" who are alcoholics on wine. Your husband has any num- ber of the signs of an alcoholic --his dependence on it, need- ing it night after night; - his blackouts; his temper; even his stubborn excuse - making, that he isn't an alcoholic because he drinks only beer. If he is bound to be an alco- holic, he might at least be hon- est and admit it--except that alcoholics rarely do so. They use all sorts of transparent ar- guments trying to prove that they aren't. Significantly, when they do admit 'the truth, that is the 1:30 PA. 4--The Munsters Morning 1i--Special Movie ?. Six spades dummy, after which he would be able to ruff a club to assure twelve tricks. But when he fully, South came up with the right answer, At trick four he played a heart to the ten and exited from dummy by ruffing a diamond with the king. : He then returned to dummy by playing a trump to the eight, efter which he rvffed the jack diamonds ii. the jack of spades. He was now in a tion to draw Wesrt's re trumps. He played a spade to the ten and then cashed the queen, on ben ong he discarded the queen of clu The dummy reversal method of play succeeded admirably and South took the' last four tricks with the A-K-Q-9 of hearts. There probably is little you can do to help him. Even wait- ing for him to collapse, and then putting him in a: "drying- out hospital" is not necessarily a reliable way, since many a habit-ridden drunkard returns to the bottle (beer or any other kind) after asthe process. The main hope is that he will see what a mess he is making of his own life, and yours, in time to want to stop. You can't make up his mind for him, He has to do that himself. Dog Patrols Used At Prisons TORONTO (CP) -- Powerful German-shepherd dogs, trained in riot-control work, are used on night patrols in five Cana- dian maximum-security _peni- tiaries, A. J.
