It teaches us those things that man could never discover for himself, but without which he has no grounds for the hope of eternal life. it reproves us for our sins and leads us into God's way teaching us how to live righteously among men. Paul's wisdom and his coun- sel to Timothy apply equally to us if we are to continue in the process of growth, This involves, on our parts, that we become well versed in the Bible, which we affirm to be the Word of God, Less definite was Agriculture] Minister William Stewart of On- tario who said his province was interested in joining the plan as the result of assurance that UNITED CHURCH Dr. H. As was his custom, Paul took up his operations from the syn- jagogue, though it is reasonable to assume that, as was also his custom, Paul did much work among the Berean Gentiles. In Berea Paul found the Jews "more noble" than those he had left in Thessalonica; probably less bigoted, more liberal and free from prejudice than the Thessalonian Jews had been, Paul attributes their readiness to receive the Gospel message to their habit of searching the Scriptures daily to discover whether the things son bir learning were supported by t Word of God. We turn now to the portion of the lesson, drawn from II Tim- othy, and begin with a recapi- tulation of Paul's own life as an example of selfless devotion to Christ. Though Timothy was well aware of Paul's background the Apostle reviewed it and, in 11 words, summed up his ex- perience as a Christian. He was sound in doctrine, de- voted in his manner of life, un- swerving in purpose ,strong in faith, meek in suffering, outgo- ing in charity, virtuous in pa- tience, enduring under persecu- tion, and humble in his afflic-| tions. In his life Paul was called/ upon to endure all the hardships which could be visited upon one man. Yet he is able to claim triumphantly, 'Out of them all the Lord delivered me." Using his own life as an ex-/ ample, Paul warns that all who are determined to live a godly life will suffer persecution, but their salvation rests with God.
