6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, July 17, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' A BUSY WEEK! Oshawa Green Gaels played in St. Catharines last night and they play Etobicoke Terriers here on Monday night, in a very important game. Brooklin's senior lacrossers have a big game at home tonight, one that has a definite bearing on the ultimate standing of the Senior OLA group. Down at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Sta- dium, tonight, there's a soccer doubleheader which is of prime importance to the teams concerned. Looking back over the past week, we find that this has been one of the most active of the: summer season, for local sports fans. The lawn bowlers have been busy, and successful, too! La- crosse, baseball, softball, tennis, all of the popular summer activities have been in high gear. Green Gaels won over Mimico 'Mounties' and that had to be the big win of the season, in the Junior "A" lacrosse circuit. That win, we think, clinched first place in the final league standings, for our Green Gaels. It's important because, if they hold to the top rung, and we think they will, they will get that all- important "extra" or 'odd' game, in any playoff series they have -- and the home floor advantage has got to put the polish on Green Gaels and rate them as the logical choice to win the Eastern Canada Junior "A" lacrosse crown and right to meet 'the best from the west" in the Cana- dian championship finals, for The Minto Cup. That coveted bauble is right here in Oshawa and, all things being normal, it. will remain here in Oshawa for another year, In Junior lacrosse today -- there are the Green Gaels -- and then there are the others! POPULAR WIN! Scugog Cleaners captured the 8th an- nial Oshawa City and District Softball Association's All- Ontario Softball Tournament, here a week ago. This had to be one of the most popular softball triumphs of the season. At the outset, it was felt that current Oshawa stars did not belong in the Ontario program. The charge was not without foundation either! Scugog Cleaners had performed in an in-and-out manner for the first part of this season but last Saturday, they suddenly became welded together as a real team and their response brought top honors. We now have a much better entry in the OASA Junior "'A'"' playoffs. DID YOU SEE IT? Our sports pages this week, carried the story of Tony Hamilton, the Western Canada puckster who started playing organized hockey at 69 and last year, he scored 15 goals, in an Industrial League. We think this is sport news of special importance at anytime -- but we also couldn't help but recall that Johnny Bower is regarded as "the old man" in the NHL. Here's a 'youngster' who can laugh at all the so-called "oldies", 'Squadron Leader' Wins Fort George Stakes Trot 8T. Kenny Thompson's two goals and four assists would have. pushed him to 99 points, three points off the pace, and Gaylord Powless' goal and pair of as- sists would have given him 96. Other Gael markers were net- ted by Jim Higgs with two, and Dwight Davies and Phil Clayton with one each. St. Kitts goals came from Doug Favell with two, while singletons went to Bill Thorne, Bob Melville, Jim McGrath and Bill Young. The second frame nearly end- ed in a free-for-all, when John- ny Davis was assessed a minor penalty for charging Brian Mel- ville at the 20-minute mark. Melville jumped Davis from be- hind after the call, and the Supertest bench, along with sev- eral Gaels, leaped over the boards. The Oshawa Green Gaels Fri- day night came within 27 sec- onds of moving two points ahead of Mimico Mounties, for sole possession of top spot in the OLA Junior 'A'. But with the Oshawans leading St. Catharines Supertests 12-6 at the Garden City's Haig Bowl, referee Denny Peterson called the game on account of rain at 4.33 of the third period. Under CLA regulations, five minutes of the third period must be played in order that the con- test be official. Not only did the "no contest" ruling cost Green Gaels first place, but it also left John "Shooter" Davis stranded in second spot in the scoring race, four points behind Billy Armour of Hastings.
