6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tussdey, July 13, 1968 PORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' REEN GAELS took over undisputed possession of first » in the OLA Junior "A" League race, here at the Auditorium last night, when they defeated a deter- 'mined. Mimico Mountaineer club by a score of 18-14. It robust game with Gaylord Powless and Brian each scoring five goals while Ken Thompson had and Johnny Davis had five. Neil Armstrong and scored a pair of goals. For Brian Thomp- s easily his best game of the year and he was throughout the piece. Gaylord Powless got wracked a little, in the second period, but returned to action 4 nty of vim vag ig 'rather bat 'cing into the final period, 4 'canto, te saiered a scoring edge over the homesters and at the very finish, were pressing hard. Goalie Don painfully injured with only about three minutes to go in the third period. At first, there serious head or neck or back injuries, but following examination and observation at Oshawa General Hospitai, it was revealed that Crocker suffered a concus- sion. LASI NIGHT'S win, coupled with the fact that Hast- was defeated last night again, at Long Branch, puts the Oshawa Green Gaels now almost in the clear, in the race for a first-place finish, at the end of the 5s i. Both Mimico and Oshawa each have five games left to play, while Gaels have two more at home and three away. This means that the schedule has only until the end of this month to run, with Oshawa playing their final date two wecks from tomorrow night, in Etobicoke. After that comes the playoff grind, which will be fraught with danger all the way. Certain teams get "up" for playoff action and when you run into a combination of the odd injury to a key player, coupled with a surprising top performance-- that's when you have the ingredients for a major upset. Just anything can happen, especially in the age-limit ranks. SPORT SHORTS -- Neil 'Butch' McMahon smacked a home-run blow, at Kew Gardens last night, in the 10th in- ning, to give Oshawa Tohy's a 1-0 victory over Toronto Plating. Ron Taylor went the distance as Tony's pitcher, to claim his fourth win of the season... . RANDALL- roys play Tony's here at Alexandra Park this Wednesday night. . . . LEGIONNAIRES, this city's top baseball team, came up with a couple of brilliant victories over the week- end. Playing in the Hamilton area, in an elimination tour- nament. Oshawa Legionnaires scored two victories, 3-1 and 2-0 and' in each case, their pitcher had a no-hit performance. The two wins assures Oshawa Legion Jrs. of a berth in the Kiwanis Tournament at Scarborough, later this month. Winner of that, will represent Eastern Canada in the big North American tournament, across the border, about three weeks from now. . . . LAST NIGHT, Legionnaires were not as fortunate. Playing in the Leaside Junior League sched- ule, the Oshawa boys dropped a 5-4 decision to Richardson's Sports.....GENOSHA ACES surprised Jay Cees, in their City and District Juvenile Softball League game, last night. The win tightens up the race for playoff positions, with People's, Jay Cees and Genoshas now all tightly bunched. Gail Harvey Leads Way. Don Crocker, Mimico goalie, was injured late in the third period of the contest, when he left his crease to retrieve a loose ball and collided with Charlie Marlowe of the Gaels. Crocker lay unconscious for about 15 minutes, and when finally revived was carried from the auditorium on a stretcher. The young net-minder was taken to Oshawa General Hospital lwhere he was admitted with undetermined head injuries. Crocker played a great game for the visitors, turning aside 47 shots and letting in 18, before Allan Duke took over with three minutes left. Duke was tested five times and made the save on each occasion. Oshawa peppered the Mimico goal-keeper early in the game, when the visitors received a pair of penalties, but Crocker made several great stops, par- ticularly on Jim Higgs and Gaylord Powless. GAELS SCORE EARLY Gaels counted six goals in the opening frame to two for Moun- ties, while 'the Oshawans out- shot the visitors 23-9.
