cee OSS By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' » YESTERDAY was a big day in the local sports whirl, "with Oshawa teams scoring victories in all the major 3 games, except--one. Lone losers in the Wednes- 'he y report were the Junior Legionnaires, who scored five runs in the first inning at Leaside's Talbot Park last night "put still lost their league schedule game to Richardson's Sports, 12-10. Most exciting win was by Tony's, who came from behind a 2-0 deficit to finally tie New Toronto in the 8th "inning and then the Oshawans took the Beaches League ver- dict in the bottom of the ninth inning. The winning run was produced when catcher Vern Walker retrieved "Barney" Old- field's bunt, just in front of the plate, then threw the ball high to first, for a three-base error and Oldfield came home with the winning run when pinch-hitter Dave Kelly "fouled four pitches in succession and then drilled a single out through the middle of the diamond. In lacrosse action, Green Gaels romped to another win, in Etobicoke and at home (Whitby Arena) the Brooklin seniors defeated Bramp- ton, in their key game. Oshawa Juvenile - Juniors won the first game of the new County League schedule, MAIN ATTRACTION around these parts yesterday was the big monster track and field meet at Alexandra Park, an- nual Oshawa Public Schools' "Games." They had a crowd of over 3,000 on hand. They had a total of 48 events, in addition to numerous heats in the sprints, divided into classes, Novice, Bantam, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. In all, there were almost 500 competitors -- truly a monster sports day and a big thrill for all who took part, especially the winners. The youngsters gave it everything they had too -- one girl col- lapsed at the finishing line, but quickly revived. Two new records were set, Frank Sawyer of King St. School, set a new mark in the boys' senior high jump and in the girls' senior high jump, Marilyn McKinley of College Hill boosted the record. Most interesting story of the day, in our opinion, conrerned Elaine Ford, of the Vincent Massey school. Elaine, of Intermediate age, was rated as a substitute, for her school, in the Inter. 100-yard dash event. The school didnt' have any senior girls for the senior 100-yard dash, so Elaine was entered in the event. She won it! SOFTBALL fans are reminded that there's another City and District Major League doubleheader at Alexandra Park this evening, starting at 6.15 o'clock and a single game 'on Friday night, 8.00 o'clock. There is also a.game in Brooklin tomorrow night, under the lights. Saturday night, at Alexan- dra Park, Oshawa "Bad Boys", currently' leading the City and District league race, with five wins and only one de- feat, will be hosts to Burlington Legionnaires, in an exhibi- tion game, starting at eight o'clock. Kelly who has play softball and baseball since he was seven, is a good man to' have around, Coach "Rich" March of Tony's, who is set in his starting line- up, likes Kelly around. 'He's sort of the Billy Harris of our club," quipped March after Kelly broke the 2-2 tie and kept Tony's in contention for first place, "Kelly plays every- where and does it well," added March, "and I know every coach in the loop would Hke one just like him." Kelly, as a pinch-hitter, drove in the winningrun in the 9th, "Barney" Oldfield, lead of the inning with a bunt and arrived on third base via the catcher's throwing error into rightfield, trying to nip him at the gate- way éack. Up came Kelly, with Oldfield in scoring position and none out stood at two-all, heading into the second period. Just what co&'ch Crawford did or said to his charges at the end of the. first period, we do not know, but it must have taken a good hold on the local fellows, They came _ storming out, rough-and-running and held the Escelsiors well in check for the entire period. What shots did get by the defence were well-handled by goalie Baker. At the other end of the rink, John Jefferson, who played the first two periods, was not enjoy- ing the goings on nearly as well. He was bombarded with shot- after-shot. One even got him right on the top of the head and appeared to take a toll on the big fellow; as he retired at the end of the second period and still complained of feeling dizzy and leg-weary after the game, In the meantime, the Brooklin team had pumped home six goals in the second period and had the game well in hand Going into the third and final had two and one assist for his night's 'tireless efforts. Don Bruce, who opened the scoring for Brooklin, and. Doug Vipond, r|who got the 10th goal of the game for the 'Good Guys", ejeach had aces, Don Arthurs, who won the 0;Senior scoring championship last season, got-loose for a pair sjof goals in the final period.
