sgl Seif PC @ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, Mey 15, 1965 SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' THE ANGLERS, and like all other communities, we have a flock of them in Oshawa and district, were 'slowed down just a little this spring, by the weatherman. Sure, the nearby streams were open on May Ist but a lot of the ardent fishermen were thwarted in their hopes to visit a favorite spot due to the late breakup. And even if this hadn't hap- pened, we think a Saturday in May is an excellent time to publish the following poem, which appeared this past week in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Review, courtesy of one of the Department's supervisors, Norman D. Patrick, son of the author -- W. M. P. Patrick, THE ANGLER'S LIFE Oh! The angler's life is a life of peace By the stream and the lake, he can find release From the trials and cares and incessant strife Of civilization's madcap life In the cool of the wood, he can rest and dream Or eavesdrop on gossipy woodsy stream Where the trail leads down to gravelly brink-- At dusk see the doe and fawn at drink. He may leisurely fish and apply his creed That he take not more than his frugal need Then he trudges homeward, the stars as guide, With his body and soul fresh, purified, Oh' The angler's life is a life of love For the fish and the beasts and fhe wings above. studies creation's incredible plan Waile he grieves for the criminal waste of man-- The fire-swept forest, depleted hill, Tne dried out stream where the whip-poor-will Was wont to call in the evening gloom Ere greed and carelessness spelt his doom; And he strives to show the blinded eyes The tawdry worth of their golden prize "Oh Father," he prays for the greedy few, "Forgive -- they know not what they do." W. M. P. Patrick (1893-1961) He BRIGHT BITS -- Oshawa Tony's will open their Beaches Fastball League schedule on Wednesday evening of next week. at Alexandra Park, when they are "at home' to the Shopsy's 7-Up squad, starting at eight o'clock. Tony's have several new faces in their line-up for this season, graduates from the Oshawa City and District Assoc. circuit but man- ager Fred Bidgood will not likely make his final selection until each has been given a trial or two, this month SOCCER FANS are. reminded that the Oshawa and District Senior League swings into action this evening, at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium, with their first Saturday night doubleheader, starting at 7:00 o'clock ONTARIO'S Wil- lingdon Cup golf team for 1965 will be selected on the four low scorers in the combined 54 holes of the Ontario Open at Trafalgar, late in June, and the 18-hole qualifying round of the Ontario Amateur, at Richmond Hill, on July 21st , NIAGARA FALLS Flyers won The Memorial Cup last night, as expected and predicted, with an 8-1 win over Edmonton Oil Kings. The Flyers proved themselves the best Junior hockey team in the East and in Canada but coach "Hap" Emms and his team will have to wail a long time to live down the stigma of that disgraceful affair of Monday night's third game of the series ... CANADIAN Professional Foot- ball men had a meeting yesterday morning and as grace- fully as possible, under the circumstances, backed down from that ridiculous ruling of "riaturalized Canadians" being eligible for their league play. There have been some great "boners" in sport but this one was a glaring misconduct. No matter how they dress it up -- the whole sports world knows -- they had to back up! Dave Quibel, pitching for East York, was tagged for nine: hits by the Oshawa batters but the only run he yielded came in the second inning when Dave Mitch- ell.opened with a double and then with one out, Rod Williams also doubled, Wayne Cookson, Mitchell and Williams each had two hits for Oshawa but their team's attack was too scattered to be effective. Murray Godfrey started on the mound for Oshawa Legion. He gave up a run in the third in- ning after two out, on a walk to Ian Brajthwaite, another walk to Len Cotton and then a double by Bob Levac. In the first in- ning, Fred Norman was safe on an error, after striking out and he later scored on a similar play on Len Cotton, for East York's first run. The score stayed at 2-1 until the 8th when Braithwaite 'singled with one out, stole sec- lond base, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Cotton's sac- rifice fly, to left field.
