10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, Mey 7, 1965 By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR "Everything From Soup To Nuts' NIAGARA FALLS Flyers defeated Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1 last night in Edmonton, to take a 2-0 lead in their Memorial Cup championship finals and while, being Juniors, a sudden let-down by the Flyers is not impossible, it begins to look very much as if the OHA Champions can sweep the Canadian title in four-straight games. If they really like Ed- monton -- they might lose one game! The way things are going: it looks very much as if both Canada's 'national amateur hockey championships" are already settled. Niagara Falls Flyers, with a two-game lead, should be able to take the Memorial Cup Junior laurels, without much trouble, Sherbrooke Beavers trounced Nelson Maple Leafs last night, for their third-straight win in the Allan Cup finals and an- other victory, get--it--over--now, couldn't be anything else but kind to the Western Canada representatives. Sherbrooke has dominated Allan Cup playoffs this season,. a fact that shouldn't be overlooked by the CAHA, when it comes to de- ciding which teams get.the "go sign'"' for a jaunt to Europe. THE NHL ALL-STAR team for the 1964-65 season has been announced! Looking it over, one cannot find too much fault with the final selection. They named Roger Crozier as their top goalie -- and since he appeared in 70 games and kept Detroit Red Wings in the picture on numerous shaky occasions, he has to be recognized as the best over the full season. Johnny Bower, Glenn Hall and Montreal's Hodge- Worsley combination were all very good, but from October to April, Crozier was "'it". Defence spots went to Pierre Pilot and Jacques Laperriere. Bill Gadsby and Carl Brewer made the "second team". This had to be the toughest section for the voters. On the forward lines, Claude Provost, Norm UIl- man and Bobby Hull got the call, On the second team, they had Gordie Howe, Stan Mikita and Frank Mahovlich. We have to wonder what happened to Jean Beliveau, Henry Richard, Pulford, Wharram, Delvecchio and a few others. : WHITBY'S Lasco "Steelers", their very good Junior "B" f lacrosse team, is playing an exhibition game this Sunday ; afternoon in the Whitby Arena, against the Toronto Mo- hawks, at 2:00 o'clock. Word is that coach Jim Hinkson of the Whitby "Steelers" has one of those "delightful problems" --he has so many good players that he doesn't even yet know for, sure, which ones to keep for the season. Manager Frank Wilbur and GM Jim Bishop will sit down with Coach Hinkson after Sunday's game, to make their final selections for their season's roster, Adding (?) to the Whitby problem is the fact that when Jim Bishop finally cuts his own Oshawa Green Gaels to size, there'll be some additional talent' avail- able for the Whitby team. The situation, almost too healthy for harmony, means that the Oshawa Juvenile-Junior League will be a very strong group this year. Any boy who hasn't yet registered for this League, can do so by contacting John Sadowski, at 8-5162. Their next workout is on Wednesday of next week, with teams to be announced the day before . Dairy and others, Ralph 'Pop' Taylor, manager of the Midget Green Gaels, has been holding regular practice sessions with his team along with coaches Bernie Abrams and Bill Davenport. The Midget Gaels appear to have an excellent chance to win their share of games in the tough Midget league. At an executive meeting last week, a number of appoint- ments were made for the year. Appointed as league conveners jwere Bernie Lawton for Tyke; Bill Lowe for Novice; Jim Ves- sey for Peewee; Iggy Clarke for Bantam; and Mike Karas for |Midget. Each of the conveners are now finalizing the selections and managers for their respective teams. There will be five leagues in operation this year in the Osh- awa Minor league, with four teams in each league, bringing the total number of teams to twenty, an increase of four from the 1964 season.
