Douglas Queries Uranium Treaty OTTAWA (CP) -- Opposition members of Parliament prodded Prime Minister Pear- son Thursday for more inform- ation on the possible sale of uranium oxide to France, but Mr. Pearson added little to what he had said earlier. T. C. Douglas, leader of the New Democratic Party, re- ferred to the "somewhat disas- trous"' results of the Canadian uranium agreement with the United States, and he wanted to know whether the proposed sale to France would be based on a 25-year fixed-price con- tract or whether the price could be changed during the contract. Mr. Pearson, repeating state- ments he made Wednesday, said the negotiations are being carried out between a Canadian commercial company and the French government, The Cana- dian government would be in- volved only in seeing that inter- national obligations, governing the uses of the uranium, are upheld. Mr. Douglas asked whether the Atomic Energy Commission would be consulted. The prime minister said it had been con- sulted at every stage. The NDP leader then asked for comments on press reports that the European Atomic Energy Commission would be given the responsibility for see- ing that the uranium is use only for peaceful purposes. Mr. Pearson said these matters are under discussion, and press re- ports at this stage are specula- tive. > PARLIAMENT | GENERAL MOTORS' STE. He also announced a pro- posed cut to seven per cent from eight the cash reserve that must be kept by char- tered banks. Robert Prittie (NDP--Burn- aby - Richmond) promised a fight against a proposed amendment that would keep the provinces from buying bank shares. Marcel Lambert (PC -- Ed- monton West) said he did not see the need for prohibition of foreign investment in banks except for voting stock.
