This ability may help us sur- |vive, said Dr. Arnold Ludwig of Madison, Wis. Without this faculty, men or women might not have some flashes of insight, or ability to think creatively, or to perform acts of heroism, or to get along | socially, he told the American Psychiatric Association. The word "trance" is usually associated with hypnosis--and everything from parlor tricks and the story of Svengali ex- ercising powers over Trilby to helping people stop smoking. In this field, 'there is a morass of theories' trying to explain what a trance is, Lud- wig said. MANY FORMS From a broader perspective, "it would seem that the hyp- notic trance, as we know it to- day, is only one of many differ- ent forms of trance," he ad- ded. "Trance or trance-like states may occur when an individual is absorbed in listening to or dancing to music, engaged in artistic creation, prayer, reve- ries, meditative contemplation," or driving on a highway, or al- most any situation where he's "exposed to monotonous, rhyth- mic stimuli, relative immobili- zation, fatigue, intense intellect- ual absorption," he said. 1 "trance phenomena are much more widespread than are generally supposed, and constitute a normal or common, rather than an abnormal or un- usual, mental faculty. "Much as most of man's fac- ulties have been evolved to al- low him to cope better with his environment, it also seems likely that man's capacity for trance may serve some impor- tant survival functions." As examples, Ludwig said: "Trances may allow a person, to experience reality in some totally different way, thus help- ing him to accomplish things or performs tasks which he or- dinarily might not consider pos- sible," CAN FIX ATTENTION In a trance, a person can "ex- clude from consciousness all traneous thoughts and outside or bodily influences" and so de- vote more attention, memory and energy to solving prob- lems, or to think creatively. Socially, trances may lead to great social cohesion, Ludwig said, for the person tends to lose. his own sense of identity and "may become more sus- ceptible to outside influences." In those circumstances, he can be swayed by demagogue or the religious healer or dy- namic speaker "for either de- structive or constructive ends." But he also may become 60- cially aware "'by virtue of his merging his identity with others and becoming more susceptible to their feelings and thoughts." A-1] Exceeds WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pres- a jet interceptor created by ithe designer of the U-2 spy has bettered world speed | Johnson said the YF-12A air- craft, formerly called the A-11, jexceeded 2,000 miles-an-hour on ja straight course and hit a speed of 1,688 miles-an-hour on a closed course -- meaning a round-trip flight from one point to another and back. The plane's new world records on two flights were made Sat- urday by different crews at Ed- wards Air Force Base, Calif. The old record for a straight course--1,665.8 m.p.h. set July 7, 1962, by a Soviet E-166 jet. The same Soviet aircraft es- tablished the old closed-course s| record of 1,491.9 m.p.h. on Oct. U.S. Jet World's Fastest, 2,000 M.P.H. 7, 1961, DESIGNED U:2 Johnson noted in a statement that the YV-12A was designed by vice-president "Kelly" John- son of Lockheed Aircraft Corp., the builder of the plane. John- son also designed the U-2. Johnson's weekend statement referred to a_ straight-course record of "over 2,000 miles-an- hour." A precise speed claim will be [filed with the Interna- tional Federation of Aeronau- tics after electronics speed cali- brations have been completed. The craft, in its interceptor form, has a gross weight of 90,- 000 pounds and is powered by two jet engines each delivering a thrust reported to be between 35,000 and 40,000 pounds. The plane is said to have a ~axi- mum range of 4,000 miles. | Girl Wins Speech Test By BEVERLEY WARING The Easter holidays are over for another year and Pickering District High School students are back to the glue factory for a hard working but short term Needless to say, some had more linteresting holidays than others.
