4 22A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, April 30, 1968 HIGH, WIDE AND HANDSOME High, wide and handsome! Horticulturists have come up with a single new rose bush variety with new di- mensions; it can be grown as a medium or tall bush, elimber, rambler or fence- cover. Called Joseph's Coat because -of its multi-colored tones of red, orange and yellow, this new hybrid rose is the very first plant of its kind to provide the home gardener with so many op- tional applications. Bring: Spring Into Basement [f your basement looks like an overcrowded dungeon, there's no better time to bring it to life than early Spring ... all you need is a dash of imagination} and a short stint with the paint brush! Color can turn an dark basement into a cozy rec reation room, a cheerful work shop, or a- sparkling room, says Ann Boyce, styling dire Corporation, turers Unsightly concrete blocks or poured raw concrete walls, ex- posed beams, heating ducts and pipes can all be camouflaged with color to turn a bleak; gray basement into a gay, useful room. As Miss Boyce points out, the right colors cost no more than the wrong ones! While walls painted all white are uninspiring, pastel shades reflect natural or artificial light and help erase gloom caused by limited light. A contrasting color in the center part of the ceiling will even make a room seem higher than it really is. And re- flected light on pastel or beige- tone walls will not strike direct- ly at the eyes as with white walls. "Darker colors absorb heat and light colors reflect heat and light into the room," says Miss Boyce, also noting that colors have a psychological effect as well. Rich and vibrant oranges and reds are dramatic and stim- ulating, whereas greens and blues are soothing and restful. After choosing your color, pre- pare your surface properly. Clean surface thoroughly to re- move dirt, grease, calcimine or whitewash; wire brushing, scraping and sanding will re- move loose, scaling paints. If basement walls are mildewed, they should be washed with a solution of 1% cups of ordinary household bleach. to one gallon of water. Let the solution stand for about five minutes to allow for bleaching action, then rinse unsightly | eolor paint manufac- laundry | ctor of the O'Brien|c ,with clear water and dry thor- loughly. Fill cracks in blocks or concrete wall with a concrete jmixture or an epoxy patching | compound. Check heating ducts and pipes for rusting. New or lrusted metal surfaces should be primed with a rust-inhibitive -;primer before painting multi-purpose latex far walls, | Use a emulsion formulation ceilings and heating ducts; over concrete floors with a lhigh gloss floor enamel or low lustre latex floor enamel. Because the remodeling was imaginative as well as practi- eal, with emphasis on good con- struction material, the house took on more value (in case of later resale) -- a fun-place. 'Flameless Heat Flexible, Modern Adding a room to your home? Why not heat with flameless electric heat? There's no need to rip out walls or floors .. . no ducts or pipes'to install. . . no expensive time-consuming in- stallation, There are three main types of electric heating equipment; BASEBOARD -- with this t.pe, the elements take the place of the normal baseboard in a room and are so inconspicuous that unless pointed out, they are not noticeable. PANEL -- fit inte or onto the wall. They are most effective when used outside walls and under windows. CABLE -- The heating ele- ments are embedded in the ceil- ing or floor and are completely hidden from view. Your local utility company or electrical contractor will give you full details regarding cost. Power Tools Now Pronged For Safety The public should be more cautious in power-tool usage, the National Safety Council has warned. With safety in mind, a firm has introduced a new line of safety tools which it terms shock-proof. For example, a light-weight %4-inch drill fea- tures a chuck spindle, trigger switch and housing of tough plastic that will not conduct electricity, and consequently eliminates the danger of shock.
