North-South vulnerable. 1@ INT Pass Opening lead -- ten of spades In notrump contracts the de- clarer frequently must choose which of two long suits to at- tack first. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to formulate a rule that will govern all such cases, and declarer is best ad- vised to rely on the common sense of a particular situation rather than attempt to follow any general rule. Let's say that South is in three notrump and wins the spade lead with the queen. He now faces a crucial decision-- whether to play diamonds or clubs first. He knows from the bidding that he is contending with a long spade suit held by | East. If you look at all four hands, you see that South makes the contract by attacking diamonds first. East's king of diamonds is forced out, declarer ducks the next spade lead, and East's re- maining spades wither on the vine. Declarer eventually makes four notrump. But if South attacks clubs first, he goes down. West takes the ace, returns a spade, and East later scores the king of diamonds to defeat the contract one trick. The question is whether South, who does not see the opponents' cards, can reasonably determine that it is better to lead dia- monds ahead of clubs. Actually, he should, but the reason is not that the diamonds are longer. That is only a coincidence. South should reason instead that if West has the king of diamonds, the contract cannot go down. He therefore mentally assigns the king to East and dispossess him of that card before the spades can become established. Attacking diamonds must be right regardless of which defender has the king. It is true that if East has both the king of diamonds and ace of clubs, the diamond play will prove ineffective. But in that case, the club lead will also fail. The point is that the dia- mond lead will make the hand if it can be made, while the club lead will. from time to time cause the contract to be lost. CONTRACT CHANGED BOSTON (CP) Herman Greenberg of the Massachu- setts State Boxing Commission announced Monday that the winner of the Cassius Clay- Sonny Liston heavyweight title fight May 25 must face one of the top four challenges listed by Ring magazine. The original contract called for the winner to fight a challenger listed by World Boxing Association but ithe WBA refused to recognize the fight because it violates the association's return-bout rule, Ring magazine's top four con- tenders, in order, are: Liston, Floyd Patterson, Terrell and George Chuvalo of Toronto. 46.
