@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, Merch 16, 1965 N.Y. Rangers President Supports NHL Policy By BEN NEW YORK (APS oa Jen- nings, president of New York Rangers, presents a staunch de- fence of the National Hockey League club's youth movement and calls recent criticism of management's «hee com- om irresponsible. The published criticism stems mainly from the trading of vet- eran Camille Henry to Chicago} Black Hawks last month, less than a year after Andy Bath- gate, another nigh scoring winger was dealt to Toronto Maple Leafs. The Rangers have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs only once in the last seven seasons. Despite a fifth-place standing in 'the six-team circuit this season, they will finish only a few thousand short of last year's club attendance record. Home attendance through the first 30 games in Madison Square Gar- den in 1964-65 was 430,048--an average of 14,300. REMEMBER WHEN? . . By THE CANADIAN PRESS Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League played. in a record high- scoring game of 19 goals 21 years ago tonight--in 1944-- for the secona time in 12 days. They lost to Detroit 10-9 in Detroit. On March 4 the Bruins had beaten New York 10-9 in Boston to set the modern era high-scoring revord. "We're trying to build a con- tender with more youth, more size and more depth," says Jen- nings. ' : "I personally made the deci- sion that we had to trade several of our top stars after I realized that we were going no place. I had hoped that the Bathgate trade would do the trick, but when I felt it wouldn't we start- ed working on the Henry deal." SELLING PRAISED For Bathgate, 32, and Don Mc- Kenney, 30, another forward, the Rangers acquired defencemen Rod Seiling and Arnie Brown plus forwards Bob Nevin, Dick Duff and Bill Collins. Seiling, 20, Brown 23, and Nevin, 26, are with the club now. Duff was traded to Montreal Canadiens for Billy Hicke, 26. "There isn't a better prospect in the league right now than Seiling," boasted Emile Fran- cis, the club's general manager. "An official of the Toronto club told me recently that they wouldn't have made the trade with us if they knew how good Seiling was going to turn out to be,' disclosed Jennings, who took er the club presidency three fears ago. Bathgate, the Rangers' all- time scoring leader, has been a relative disappointment with the Maple Leafs this year, scoring 15 times in 46 games. Henry, 32, was trade? for for- wards Doug Robinson, 24 and John Brenneman, 22, and de- fenceman Wayne Hillman, 26. Robinson had six goals and eight assists for 14 points in his first 14 games with New York. Henry had only two goals in 15 games for Chicago. Francis, named general man- ager four months ago, cited the Rangers last previous youth movement in the early 1950s as one that led to Stanley Cup berths in 1956, 1957 and 1958. "The Rangers brought up Bathgate, Henry, Harry Howell, Lou Fontinato and _ others," Francis recalled. "That youth movement paid off."
