10 THE OSHAWA TIMES; Wednesday, February 24, 1965 SPORTS MENU _ By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' GENERALS ARE IN! Oshawa Generals made sure of 'p berth in the OHA Junior 'A' playoffs, here at Civic Audi- 4orium last night, when they tied St. Catharines Black Hawks 3-3. The lone point gave the Generals a total of 49 for 52 'games played and Kitchener Rangers, in seventh place, with 39 points, played their 52nd game last night in Peterborough and lost to the TPT's 3-2.. The best Rangers can finish with, now is a total of 47 points. But more to the point, was the point the Generals missed. They are now only six points 'ahead of Montreal Jr. Canadiens, who have three more games to play than the Generals. But one of those is that big game mext Tuesday night, when they play here in Oshawa. That's the game that could very well decide fourth place. v IN THE OTHER Junior "A" game last night, Niagara Falls Flyers won at home, 4-2, over Toronto Marlboros. That "just about clinched first place for "'Hap" Emms' Flyers, as 'they are now five points ahead of the. Marlies, with the latter having only one game extra to play. Oshawa Generals are idle now until, Sunday, when they play the first of their re- "maining four games, at Maple Leaf Gardens, against Marl- doros. A QUICK WHISTLE deprived the Generals of. a victory and that extra point last night, in the final seconds of play. Earlier in the fray, when trailing 2-0, referee Blair Graham twice called back Oshawa tallies, but the cruelest blow of all was the third time. Ron Buchanan, with his usual never- bay-die spirit, had tied the score finally, with less than four minutes to play. The Black Hawks were faltering and in the final seconds, Bobby Orr blasted a shot. The St. Kitts goalie got his body in front, tried to trap the puck with his hand, but almost immediately it fell out, at his feet and Buchanan rapped it into the goal. But in that fraction of time, the offi- cial had blown his whistle and he ruled that the goal was Scored after he had "sounded off." His explanation later was that he had lost sight-of the puck. -If he, or any other refer- ee, was to blow his whistle every time he lost sight of the puck, for such a short space of time -- then, all night long, he's sound like a peanut vendor. SHORT ORDER SPECIALS: -- The Oshawa Civil Service Softball League isn't going to sleep all winter, like the bear-- they're thinking in terms of their summer season already. League president John DeHart has called a meeting for this Sunday morning, eleven o'clock, at the Thornton's Corners School (north of No. 2 Highway, on Thornton's Road) and all interested teams are urged to have a representative on hand, or call the president at 8-3379 or Sid Loscombe, at 5-4148 ... BERNIE GUINDON, of Oshawa Boxing Club, lost a split deci- sion to John Lapadula of Toronto, in the final match for the welterweight crown, in the New York State Gold Gloves Tourn- ment, at Buffalo, last night... . FERN IRWIN has skipped her Dixie (Ontario) rink to four-straight wins in the Diamond "#)" Ladies' Canadian curling championships, at Halifax. Without benefit of "'last rock', she scored two on an extra end, to defeat Quebec yesterday. Alberta and Manitoba are "Med for second place, with one loss apiece. The Ontario ladies defeated them both, on the first day, for their flying 'start. If they get past Nova Scotia, they could go all the 'way, unbeaten. .. . STANLEY MATTHEWS received his 'knighthood at Buckingham Palace yesterday when the 50- year-old all-time great of English soccer came out, waiting crowds demanded his autograph. Sir Stanley obliged them-- jhe wrote "Stan Matthews" ! TROTTERS TRIUMPH The Red Trotters rallied in the City League last half to defeat White Aces, after trailing by 1-0 in the open- ing half. Green Devils are winless in two starts. Paul Bryant and Bruce Berry paced the winners with two points each. Robert Dervent scored White Aces' lone point. COMEDY OF ERRORS By GERRY SUTTON Despite three disallowed goals, one in the last second of play, Oshawa Generals manag- ed to tie St. Catharines Black Hawks 3-3 to ensure themselves of a playoff berth in the OHA Junior "A"' League last night. Referee Blair Graham of To- ronto said after the game, 'I called back the three goals be- cause I whistled the play dead as each time the puck was hid- den from my view." To the partisan crowd of 2,910, it seemed a miscarriage of jus- tice on each occasion. Two of the disallowed goals came in the second period with Generals trailing 2-0. The other goal that didn't count was at 19.59 of the final period with the score tied. Goal- tender Jim Keough dropped a hot drive from the blueline and Ron Buchanan flipped it into the open net. H Gaham ruled that he had blown his whistle when Keough appeared to smother the puck. The referee made no attempt to give his reason over the public address system and left the fans wondering what the final out- come of the game was. The deadlock ensured the Gen- erals of a playoff berth in. the eight-team league and left them in fourth-place with 49 points, six more than Montreal Junior Canadiens who have played three less games. St. Catharines tightened their grip on the sixth and last playoff spot. The Jun- ior Hawks are two points ahead of Kitchener Rangers. HAD THEIR TROUBLES Generals couldn't do anything right in the first period and were fortunate to escape with a 1-0 deficit. Gary MacMillan scor- ed the only goal when he beat goalie Dennis Gibson on a close-in drive. The Hawks outshot Oshawa 16-6 in the 20 minutes with Gib- son unbeatable on two goal-line stands. A wicked shot by Ken Hodge, late in the frame, near- ly increased the margin but hit Neighborhood Dart Results The following are the results of games played February 18, in the Neighborhood Dart Asso ciation: North Oshawa 3 and Fernhill 2. Centre Bill White, one of the better Oshawa performers, tal- lied at 11.24 after the St. Kitt's goalie dropped Nick Beverley's drive from the blueline. Five minutes later, Buchanan scored the equalizer, deflecting Bobby Orr's shot into the net. It was Buchanan's 44th goal of the season and extended his point-scoring streak to 29 games. The Hawks picked up nine of the 14 penalties, including a 10- minute misconduct to Hodge. None of the sentences figured in the scoring. The other eight rinks will also be in action on Thursday night, but competing in the secondary competition, the first round of The Ruddy Electric Trophy event. Keenest competition in last night's action, was provided on ice No. 5, where Doug Grant's OCC rink nosed out Jack Elliott's entry from Oshawa Golf Club, by the narrow mar- gin of 8-7. Grant's rink had come from well back to tie the score at 6-6, on the 8th end. Brooklin Ties Serie Brooklin Redmen evened up their OHA Intermediate "Lake- shore Group" final series last night at Uxbridge, with a 6-4 victory over the Port Hope Blades. The series now stands at one win apiece, with one game tied and the fourth game of the 4-out-of-7 set, scheduled for Port Hope on Friday night. Brooklin grabbed their two- goal margin in the first period, when they outscored Port Hope, four goals to a pair. The visit- ors pumped in a couple in the second stanza, to Brooklin's one but the Redmen tightened up their defensive play in the final frame, to hold Port Hope off the scoresheet, and still man- aged to get an insurance tally for themselves.
