Little Is Heard Of Mao Tse-tung China's First Lady By BORIS MISKEW Canadian Press Staff Writer Mme. Mao Tse-tung, former Chinese movie star whose hus- band is regarded by many Chi- nese as the father of modern China, rarely makes public ap- pearances these days. The attractive wife of Com- munist Party Chairman Mao Tse-tung has faded into the} background in recent years after a career as a motion pic- ture star in Shanghai and as a} Communist party worker. | Little is heard nowadays in| Peking about Mme Mao, fourth) wife of the Chinese leader, and her infrequent public appear- ances were recently attributed to ill health. This is in contrast to the ap- pearances of the wives of Liu Shao-chi, the Chinese head of state, and Premier Chou En-lai, who often are seen accompany- ing their husbands at public functions. However, Mme. Mao's name figured on the list of deputies | at a last session of the Chinese parliament, the ple's Congress. REPORTED ILL The Maos live in an old one- storey house in the former im- perial city in Peking and the party chairman himself has been reported as being in failing health. | Recent photographs have shown he has lost weight. He still smokes heavily and oc- casionally drinks a little rice wine. He sometimes ventures out to the opera or to an official function but these trips are} rare.
