A number of Canadian geo- graphical features are named after the British wartime prime minister, his father, his grand- father or his forefathers. Several features named Win- ston or Churchill have no re- lation to the Churchill family. LEADERS HONORED A survey by the geographical branch of the mines. and tech- nical surveys department shows that there is a mountain in northern British Columbia that was named Churchill Peak in 1944 in honor of Sir Winston. Winston's Name Bisbuned In Canadian Geography named Mount Roosevelt and Mount Stalin. There is an unorganized township in Northern Ontario that was surveyed and named Churchill in 1910 or 1911. An adjoining township was named Asquith and it is presumed that Sir Winston, who headed several ministries in British Prime Minister Asquith's cab- inet,' was the Churchill after whom the township was named. Adjoining mountains are Elsewhere in Ontario, there ception is likely to be strength- ened in the years ahead. The best known feature bear- ing the name Churchill is the Port of Churchill in Manitoba. This port, established as a post and fort in 1685, was named after John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, who at the time was a governor of the Hudson's Bay Company.
