Mrs. Frank Owen and Mrs. John Colley led the devotions and read the article by Glynn Firth "The Rebellious Teenagers in our Midst'. * Mrs, Rupert Harrison intro- duced the speaker, Mr. Arthur H. Henwood, who acquainted the members on the subject of auxiliary classes in the public schools, demonstrating with slides that showed the tech- nique, procedure and the results that in some cases had proved worhtwhile. Mrs. Percy Neal thanked the speaker for his informative ad- dress. The president reminded the members of the catering proj- ect for Feb. 12, also the installa- commit- tion of officers will take place at the Sunday morning service January 30, Mrs. Ralph Boneham will be the representative at the plan- ning meeting for the World's Day of Prayer, The members were reminded of the 3rd an- nual meeting of the Presbyterial United Church Women to be held at Simcoe Street United Church February 11, registration at 1.30. SIMCOE STREET UC.W. At the Harvey Hunt Unit's meeting of Simcoe Street Unit- ed Church Women recently, the president, Mrs, Sidney G. Lailey reviewed the membership and financial standing for the past four years. While membership was down considerably, donations per member had increased about $6 which was encouraging. A num- ber of members have been lost through removal and death in the past four years. Mrs. Lai- ley suggested the unit strive tp increase the membership dur- ing 1965. Miss Margaret Patterson con- ducted the worship period on the theme "To Master Self'. A story entitled "The Mirror" was told by Miss Patterson. Miss Phyllis Glass sang "O Rest in the Lord" accompan- ied at the piano by Mrs. James CHILD GUIDANCE By GARRY C. MYERS, Ph.D. If your child in the middle grades, upper grades, high school or even in college, is se- riously lagging in one or more subjects, you may resolve to seek special help for him, You may decide to give him such help at home yourself or seek the guidance of an expert to advise you on a helping pro- gram. You may choose to take him to a special clinic, such as a reading clinic, for help. You may employ a tutor for this child. You may just hound him to work harder and abuse him if he doesn't. Or you may do nothing but just frust to luck. WEIGH ALL FACTS If your lagging child is in the elementary grades, you surely should confer with his teacher or teachers, You and the guid- ance person there available should get all the information you can and consider carefully the advice received. Whether your advice. comes from the school or an outside source, you should try to weigh carefully the available facts on_ this child's ability to achieve in any or all subjects' as well as you have expected him to achieve There seems to be an increas- ing number of teachers in our elementary schools who are Potter. 'eager for parents to seek out- Outside Assistance Helps Lagging Child side help for the lagging child. However, judging from many letters I receive, there is con- siderable resistance by teachers to efforts by parents to seek outside help, Often I read letters saying that the school assures the parent of the lagging child, "We can take care of this prob- lem here." But a number of these letters add, "We accepted this advice for a number of years and have become dis- illusioned." SCHOOL GUIDES PARENTS No doubt there's a big human and psychological problem in- volved. Some teachers, princi- pals and guidance persons may feel that, if they admit that any child could profit from outside help, this admission might sug- gest they are not doing a good job at their school. But why should they be expected to pro- vide all the extra help so many of their children need? Why should they so often expect of themselves the obviously impos- sible? Why should they not be eager to encourage all available help for every. child who might profit from such? | One big thing the school might do to aid parents find special outside help for the lagging child is to guide these. parents in finding the best help, and to |be ready to persuade the tutor lor helping source to set this THE OSHAWA TIMBS, Thursdey, Jenuery 28,1965 17 oy to do only what he is able to do. RETRACE FIRST STEPS So many tutors helping the child outside of school fail to go back repeatedly with the child in any subject to find rock bot- tom and bring him forward from there, but just keep him doing what he has found too hard for him to succeed at, If, for example, the child of the third grade lags in reading, this tutor may have him read more at this grade level. Instead, he might do better on reading ma- terials of the second grade, first or even primer difficulty, and gradually come forward from there, No matter in what grade a lagging child is in at school, he needs to be practiced at a level at which he can enjoy success.
